Would you buy a 2001 BMW 325i or a 2001 Grand Prix GTP?

Say the price was equal. The top of the line Grand Prix (GTP, 240hp!) or bottom of the line (for now) 325i?

Depending on my needs. Looks the BMW. The GTP has more potential as far as performance. I would probably pick the 325 though.

325 easy choice. If you owned it for 4 years the BMW would be worth AT LEAST twice what the GTP is worth.

BMW even though the 325 is so wimpy. I'd rather have a 330 with whatever letters after "330" equal "performance".

As problematic as the BMW "might" be (my 540 was very troublesome but a great car otherwise), the Pontiac brand is truly a POS. No comparison in my mind ... if choosing between the two ... BMW (but I would ask for the upgrade to the 850i ) ...

The reason I asked was because a guy I know (ex-friend) chose a Grand Prix GT (not GTP) over the 3 series BMW which he was buying used (a little more than the BMW, trust me money was NOT the issue). What an idiot! He was going to get the 328ci (1999) until he found out that I was on my way to buy my 3rd BMW and I'm younger than him.

If you want a vehicle with excellent all-around build quality and good resale down the road, go with the BMW.

If you want a vehicle with poor build quality and very bad resale value, go with the Pontiac

Being a BMW, even I wouldn't say BMW has "excellent" all-around build quality. All around Performance, yes, however the build quality needs a tad bit of work. I would like the build quality to be as good as Lexus (from Japan, not US).

As much as we smite the BMW on occasion here, truly there's no comparison of it and the Pontiac. Go BMW all the way, better choice performance-wise, looks, financially, ego-wise...all around. I just can't see the logic behind choosing a (any) pontiac over the BMW.

F*** you all

Yes lets asume that they are equal price..... the bottom line NAVY battleship or the top of the line speed boat.... which would you chose? When you compare apples to oranges you can't decide because the differences are to extreme. If I had the money to buy a bottom of the line BMW (bimmer.... What the FUCK is that?) I WOULDNT. I've got you beat in HP, Torque, ETC.... What exactlly DO YOU HAVE ME IN? MPG ? Wow you got you got me by 2 mpg in the city.... and only 1 on the high way... so while I see you in MY rear veiw miorror you are saving gas. I'm so proud of you. Damn I wish I had a BIMMER now. (Oh BTW I paid less too) Love to hear from ya

I decided to check this post out after reading a thread on the ClubGP boards. All I can say is you sure do have some intelligent people around here. I mean, the guy that I quoted above evidentally feels so in touch with his car that he actually consideres himself a BMW . Tell you what, any of you live near me? I'll race you, I have a 3600 lb 4-door, front wheel drive 1991 Chevy Lumina that I put a 1998 GTP engine in. Oh, and your car better run 11s in the 1/4 mile if you expect to beat me. Try checking out my website: http://luminasupercharged.com I have some old videos of some 12 second passes on there for some proof. But I agree that you can't compare these cars as a whole. I honestly don't know much about what you guys drive but try comparing them in categories such as cost, performance, comfort, reliability, and ask yourself what you care about the most. For me, I just wanted to take the car I bought when I was 16 and make it fast. Well I did it and now, 3 yrs later, I have a 12 second Lumina (soon to be running 11s) and I wouldn't sell it if you gave me 3 of your guy's cars. I don't give a damn about exquisite comfort, if I did, maybe I would have thrown some wheels on a lazy boy. Reliability? Well, my car has never left me on the side of the road, or stuck anywhere unless it was my own fault. Performance has to go to the GTP. My car has an $80 supercharger pulley on it and a $400 nitrous system (running a 75 shot) and I run mid 13s w/o nitrous and mid 12s with it. As far as cost goes, we all know the GTP is much less expensive. So try looking at it in a different perspective, just saying that a GTP is a POS is dumb. Everyone's opinion of a car is going to be different and if you want to call it a POS because you think its unreliable and cheaply made, then I guess I can call the cl-s, or whatever, a POS because they are way slower than my car and yet they cost way more. Have fun bashing me however you want to and maybe I'll get the chance to meet one of you on the street or at the strip some day to show you why people that drive american cars, drive them for performance and not because the ass-dyno is a little softer.

really simple.

if i was crazy about speed, the pontiac.

if i wasnt crazy about speed...the bmw

i dont see how you guys are discussing something so straight forward.

The person that bought obviuosly wanted speed.

Watch me get flamed....

GTP for sure!!! Why?

Everyone is into Beemers. I have owned a top of the line 96 Pontiac SE Grand Prix, fully loaded. Man! That was a fun car. It had dual pipes like our Acura but had a louder growl. My interior lights were the best I have ever seen. My buddies called it the Space Shuttle. I had the built-in compass (State of the Art in its day LOL) and the leather power seats where the headrest as well as lumbar could be adjusted with a switch. Our CL-S lumbar adjustment is a joke the way you have to crank. The lumbar on the Poctiac could be adjusted both ways (up/down as well as in/out).

My brother-in-law had a 325. Nice car but the electrics started to get screwy. They paid so much in service bills, they bought a Merk.

So. yes. GTP before the BMW in a heartbeat. But I would still take my CL-S over the GTP.

Yay, an old topic revived @_@

If I chose the GTP I'd be in a generic American car with a tacky interior.
If I chose the 325, I'd feel like a poser/wannabe who couldn't afford a real BMW.

I would choose to save the money and get something else.

For all you dumb fu$#s that would take a BMW over a GTP, lets see some time slips and ET's! I will take any 3 series on the strip or street without blinking and eye.

As far as all you saying that you have had Pontiacs in the past, say an 89 Grand Am, that is by far no comparison to a 2000 GTP!

Get a life, and get a REAL car!

I personally wouldn't take either car. Keep this in mind though. Not everyone purchases a car to race around in 24/7. The grand prix is hands down faster and more powerful, the BMW is definitely higher end with features and comfort that would outclass the grand prix any day of the week.

I'd personally choose a c32 or e55 and smoke both the grand prix and bmw 3 series, while retaining the luxury status and high end amenities.

Grand Prix's aren't all that fast either, I used to smoke then handily in my old suv, "the Typhoon", I now smoke them easily in my lil ol' station wagon, "the WRX".

BMW

With a BMW your paying for a badge, they are just as problem proned as any other vehicle. I owned a 2000 GTX before the 2001 CL-S and their is no comparison in buid quality (interior) to the CL-S. The CL-S wrecks the GTP in interior build and the exterior build is the same. Pontiac uses cheap plastic parts for most of its body parts. The GTP is not a POS, it is an average car for a average price. If you had to choose, you could be the yuppy with the BMW 325 or the asshole with that POS American GTP. I'll tell yah though all the BMW is gonna see is that gleeming Pontiac Logo. At 280 ft/ torque there is no comparison in performance.

If driving excitement means driving a car with cheap plastic parts and a very cheap interior build with lots of speed, then by all means drive excitement.

But if you want a car that will probably break down if you keep it any extended amount of time, don't get the BMW

This thread should be more appropiate to compare the 325 to a pontiac sunfire. Then of course I will choose the beemer. The GTP out classes the 325. There is nothing on the GTP that is a POS. I'll choose the GTP. If the GTP is compared to a M3 then I'll choose the beemer. Come on every car company makes a POS. And every car company TODAY also makes a decent car too. If you want to know something at least pontiac paint doesn't chip as easily as a beemer. The BMW is now using a new paint which sucks. You just flick the paint with your finger it breaks.

Quick Reply: Would you buy a 2001 BMW 325i or a 2001 Grand Prix GTP?
