Winter beater

Where can I find a $500 winter beater/commuter?

I have no preferences other than it be older than 1996 so it doesn't need to pass NYS emissions inspection.

Craigslist has some good deals but the people are so hard to get in touch with!

Are you selling something that cheap that runs?

That "$500" beater will cost you at least 4x more just to keep the car running through the winter. Try looking at Old (former cop) crown vics. Usually cheap and runs.

Public/Police auctions are your best bet.

X2 on the civic. Most don't have a/c but that doesn't matter in the winter. I'd check craigslist.

I'd also suggest an older Subaru. You'll have AWD to help out and they're very reliable.

In NY I would look for something like a 4WD pickup truck but I think you will be spending more than $500.
