This could potentially affect how much I'm willing to pay for a car if I have a better idea if the dealer stole a car at an auction or not, so does that type of sale or transfer reliably show up on a history report?

^ Assuming it's a legit auction and all paperwork was processed properly...

However the reporting of the auction may not happen until after a few days so although it may have been bought/sold in auction last week it may not reflect it yet.

Just because a dealer got the car at auction doesn't mean he got it cheap.

I've been to a few auctions over the past 2 years, just to look, my friend is the one that buys cars, and sells them, he makes pretty good money. When I was looking for a TL(over a year ago, when I was just "pre speculating, aka getting my hopes up for nothing), we went to the auction just to look(i'd never buy a car there), and there was a 04 TL with a clean title that was sold for $11k.

So you can get cars very cheap at auctions, its just a guessing game trying to figure out if they are in good condition

All good points...I'm was merely trying to verify what they were telling me. They said they did not get the car at auction. Carfax mentions nothing about auction anywhere in the history report so I'll have to assume it wasn't.
