Went to Costco to get new tires...but they won't put on a different speed rating set other than OEM (V). I was going to get some 215/55/16 Bridgestone in H-speed rating, but they said they can't mount those on since mine calls for V rating. So I got BF Goodrich Touring T/A's v rated tires at lesser cost then the Bridgestone H rated tires. So they didn't really "up-sell" me on more expensive tires since they turned out to be $40 less.

 

Probably a liability issue. Besides, why would you be getting H-rated tires that have a lower speed rating than your current tires?

H-rated are fine for our cars. Who actually drives over 108 mph for extended amounts of time anyway? or at all? Its a personal thing but I have used them and they are absolutely fine. The difference is in the rubber compound. H-rated are not as soft as V-rated which equals stickyness so V-rated handle better but wears faster becuase of this. Go with what you like though there are plenty of choices but H-rated is O.K. for people who dont drive over 108-110 something like that.

 

They don't want you blowing a tire and blaming them. the rating is speed, and load bearing capabilities. so a H rated wouldn't be able to handle the wieght of our cars either. just be happy they didn't, you could have lost it on the freeway.

Z-rated is suppost to handle up to 180mph thats what was told....i got those just incase i have to go around 180mph

 

Where is this 108mph number coming from? Everywhere I've seen, H-rated is good for up to 130mph. That's directly from tirerack.com:

This is bogus. Our cars CAME with H rated (130mph) tires, and that is what I have on my car.

Z-rated is for anything that is over 149mph, usually you can get the exact data from the manufacturer. Many of the upper Z-rated tires can go up to insane speeds.

Hate to burst your bubble - touring tires will ride soft, but don't grip as well as sport tires. IE Michelin Energy's are great tires for everyday use by grandma, but don't hold worth a shit compared to any of the Pilots. I'd take it back and demand they swap to the tires that you really want. They lied to you, even if it's a typo in their system. Take them the manual of the car and show them. Don't let them charge you for any use of the tires you have now either, it's their fucking fault.

I purchased Bridgestone RE750s at $166 each, including Road Hazard warranty, installation/balance... Tirerack wanted more for the tire, and that didn't include shipping-

 

you dont want that. even if u dont go over 81mph the weight of our car would wear those tires out quick. and when u turn u'll feel the car shifting. hit a bump and forget about the tires.

the speed rating DOES have to do with treadwear......if you notice, treadwear rating go down as speed ratings go up. (In general)

Also- if your tires blow and you wreck or die, the place that puts lower-than-OE specified speed rated tires on can be sued---At least they can in North Carolina.



Also, the 108 MPH number came not from MAXIMUM speed, but from CONSISTENT speed. H-rated tires can go UP TO 130 M.P.H., however, staying at or over 108 M.P.H. for extended periods can cause a blowout.

you are trying to relate two unrelated things based on a general trendline

treadlife is determined by how hard or soft a tire compound is..obviously softer = more grip, less life

speed rating is determined by a maximum speed a tire can safely go..it has nothing to do with the tire compound but how the tire is constructed and what types of materials are used to hold it together

tire manufacturers will construct a tire that has a high speed rating and low tread rating because they figure if a person needs to go 100+ they are using the tire for racing and want it to grip...is there any point in making a z rated tire with a treadwear of 700? no there isn't

this is why you'll see some z rated tires have a treadwear of 200 and other z rated tires with a treadwear of 400...speed rating is speed rating and treadwear is treadwear
