Who made the switch from Car to SUV?
Who made the switch from Car to SUV?
I've been thinking about it for a while that possibly my next car will be a SUV. My mom has a Highlander (not the coolest SUV) but I love driving it. I usually take it to do certain errands, and I always enjoy the extra space/being higher up on the road. I also drove my friends Tahoe LTZ, and it was very fun as well.
I'm really considering a cross-over SUV in the future such as the 09 FX37 or something similar.
Just curious for the guys that just have a SUV, do you miss having a regular car? Is the gas extremely higher? Do you find it more practical? Also is it a waste for a single young guy, to be driving a SUV for himself? Is insurance generally higher or lower?

I went from 02' TL-S to an 03' Infiniti FX45
I LOVE IT! No, I don't miss the TL-S, actually it's still in the family... my parents have it now, and I still drive it from time to time when I visit them... but I'm usually in a hurry to get back to their house to see the FX in the driveway. Yeah, I do miss the less gas consumption, but I live a mile from work, so It's really not a big deal. Insurance wasn't that bad because I have a perfect driving record and I'm 37...

I guess technically I did, although I bought my truck for business reasons and sold the TL-S b/c I didn't want it anymore (not b/c I wanted to switch to an SUV).
Honestly, I love the truck. I like being high and being able to see up and over most cars. That said, when I do decide to buy another personal vehicle... it will be a car. The truck is fun, but unless you're in a Cayanne, it's more fun driving a car. For now though I drive my truck for business, and we take my wife's car for pleasure... so I get the best of both worlds...

i did sorta...i went from cl to a colorado (truck not suv) and i really didn't miss the cl, the handling in the car was a little better till i slammed the truck, then i was good. plus the wife has an mdx if i feel the need to ride up higher.

I've only driven a handful of SUVs, but I hate the way they all handled --- minus the '07 Highlander I recently rented for a roadtrip, which was okay for long, easy drives. If you have a use for the extra space and can afford to fill the tank more, they are pretty versatile. For everyday driving, and with the needs I have right now, I'd much prefer a car though. For myself -- I don't see any need to have one, just to "have one".

Unless you need to extra space for a specific reason or are getting a true off-roading SUV for those purposes, it's a huge waste for a single guy who has no real reason for one. Mind you, people have their own desires and preferences, so maybe that's just what you would prefer to own and drive. From a completely honest and realistic standpoint though, it's a waste.
I know it's been the popular thing to drive an SUV the past fifteen years and they've become more and more luxurious and road-friendly, but I almost feel against the trend. I'd rather wait as long as I can, before I absolutely need one, to get into an SUV. In fact, I'd probably rather switch over to a wagon before an SUV, if I just needed the extra space a hatchback can provide.

I went from an Integra GSR to a new Tahoe back in '02. I missed having a smaller, more fuel efficient vehicle. The gas was a lot higher compared to my four cylinder. I was getting about 15mpg no matter how I drove it or what I did. Back then, it would cost me $48 to fill it up every three days and that was when gas was under $2 per gallon. I got rid of it for those reasons.
I loved the way it looked though, I had some 22" rims on there, but I still went back to a car. It was a waste for a young guy with no family to own something that big. My insurance was a lot lower though and I was under 20 (I just jumped right on that band wagon when big SUVs were in) when I owned it.
My opinion would be get a 5 door wagon or hatch, you can have the practicality of a SUV w/o the fuel penalty. That's my thinking now. I was living with my mom when I bought the Tahoe so my income was freed up quite a bit...

Woops, I didn't even notice you made two threads by accident. Here you go I posted this on your other thread...

I quite didn't make the jump, but in my opinion, if the car you have is starting to die, then opt for the suv for future expansion. The MDX isn't the fastest of the bunch, put is sure is fun to drive. SH-AWD kicks ass on curves, a can take an on-ramp that is a Q shape doing 55 with the MDX that the TL can max out at 40. I had an RL once and took that bad boy doing 70... Back to the point, the MPG isn't a huge drop, my TL gets 22 MPG when I drive, and on the same roads I can get around 15 If I hit vtec at every light or can get 20.5 if I baby it. On average I get 18 with the MDX. If you want sporty cross-over, go with the RDX.

My parents have an x3 that I drive quite often. It handles really well but it is more of a wagon than an SUV.

I went from an 04' TL to a Colorado Crew Cab to a 05' Jeep Limited 5.7L Hemi. The TL was quick and very nice to drive, but a bit to sedany for me. The truck was not really that fun, but useful, and the Jeep is the best of both worlds...except it drinks more gas the both the TL and Colorado. I drive a lot too, so that's not fun. However, you do only live once, and you can't take money with you, so I pay a little more in fuel to have a little better time driving. The HEMI puts out 330hp and the Jeep handles well with the QuadraTracII 4X4 system. I like being higher too as others have said. My g/f is taking over this car in 5 months, this was actually bought for her, and I'm really thinking about getting the Jeep SRT8 for myself. I like being higher, but I also like sportiness and luxury. The Limited has that, and the SRT8 has that plus a lot more power!! (All this is in another thread I started).
P.S. I love the rain sensing/speed sensing wipers. They work on their own. When its raining they go the perfect speed. When you pull-up behind cars they speed up to match the extra water splashing on the windshield, or if it rains harder, they speed up. You don't have to do anything!!

I'm lucky to have the best of both worlds. The wife drives a Pathfinder while I have my TSX. I like driving the Pathfinder when I do...usually weekends and an occasional work day commute, but there is NO WAY I'd want to drive it everyday. Like others have said, I like being up higher and there is something to driving a large/big truck, but...not everyday. It was funny, we had a new Sequoia for the weekend and while my wife loved it, I kept thinking that I was driving a dumptruck or something
I've got a 2007 Escalade and a Land Rover right now and will be selling the Land Rover and hopefully getting a Cadillac CTS for the wife. The LR is nice to haul the dog around since she just jumps into the back, but I do miss having the option to take a smaller car out. I work a mile away from where I live, so gas mileage isn't any problem, but the wife is 30 miles away across a mountain and gas is $300+ a month. With a 1 year old, and could only have one car it would be a SUV of some sort. A childseat is much easier in an SUV than in a car, also I just feel safer for me and my son in the Escalade than most any vehicle I've been in.
It seems like it's best to have both
My older friend has a CLK500, and a Tahoe LTZ...I feel its a great combo. I drive both all the time, when he lets me
I'll tell you the Tahoe LTZ is an awesome truck. So many features you feel like your driving a BMW or something.

I went from a Nissan 350z to a Ford Explorer. I was busy driving my mom around. It was alot easier for her with the SUV. She just moved to Tampa. I miss having a car, truck is going. I have a 2008 Mustang GT on order. Should be here this month.
