Whining/"chittering" sound

Under throttle, it seems almost randomly I have this whining/chittering sound at idle. The chittering gets louder with more gas. Doesn't matter if its cold/hot, or whether I'm in gear or not.... I listened in under the hood and I think its one of the pulleys, because I replaced the accessory belt with a gatorback belt a year ago.

How do I know which pulley it is? Or is it something else?

you have a manual right?>

sounds like your throwout bearing (release) is overdue. this is caused my a leaky slave or riding around with your foot on the clutch pedal. even low clutch fluid can cause premature wear.

i suggest replacing the clutch and pressure plate as well.

You can always run it with the belt off and see if the sound goes away, just don't spent too much time listening with the belt off if it runs the water pump.

Depending on the type of vehicle, it could very much be the tensioner. Sometimes the pulley will have an uneven wear pattern on it if this is the one that's faulty. For starters, remove the belt and turn each pulley by hand to determine any bearing wear. Other times the pulley or accessory making the noise is quite evident.

As phee has mentioned, it may also be the throwout bearing. If it's a throwout, the vehicle will make a continuos whining sound while driving, while sometimes going away while accelerating.
