say if a engine got A LOT of miles on it. when someone rebuild it, what do they change?

Cleaned it out, changed any worn or damaged parts. Depends on the engine. It's the same block but it's been completely taken apart, inspected, and some things repaired to be "good as new".

Look for a remanufactured engine /w a warranty online. Lots of places sell them. You'd be getting what you want and you'll get a core ($$) return for your old engine. Nice thing is you won't be without an engine, you can have the new one and old one at same time. So no downtime for you, you'd just be out the core $$ until you return the old engine to them.

I have done this /w engines and transmissions in the past. Works good, they usually freight the engine to you. Some places even have warrantys that cover labor (cheap like $30 an hour). But it's better than nothing.

Note rebuilt engines differ from remanufactured. A rebuilt engine is one where it is torn down, cleaned and rebuilt replacing only the parts that have worn beyond use. Remanufactured have been rebuilt with all new parts except for some parts such as the block that are fully reconditioned. Now you have to be careful since some companies use the terms incorrectly and there are some that do more than a rebuild and less than remanufactured.

CA doesn't have a legal definition for "rebuilt" engine, so buyer beware. Make sure you know who you are buying from and check the applicable forums for feedback from prior customers.

I've got a longblock from a CA vw place for my bus that I had shipped 'cause they were the cheapest (even with shipping included).
