What wastes more gas? Idling or Turning your car off and then right back on (5min)
Ive always wondered...Heres the scenario: Lets say you are waiting in a parking lot for someone to get off work, your tank is almost "E" and you dont have the time to go to the gas station and come back. They were supposed to get off work @ 7 sharp but ended up coming out around 7:05.
Would you have:
1. Turned off your car knowing they were going to be 5 min late?
2. Keep the car running because you arent sure if it will turn on again?
When I turned my car back on, the needle was significantly below the Empty line. Before I had turned the car off it was right on the line.
I know in many states it is illegal to idle your car, the carbon monoxide is that bad. Just the other day on the news some family had a pick up truck with an exhaust leak. Well they had one of those crew cabs and 2 children back there. The children died within minutes because of cm poisoning.

I think it's better to turn your car off...?

Turn car off.
Will use less gas but I would assume starting and stopping your car all the time would be a little tougher on all the parts vs letting it idle

For 5 min. I would turn the engine off.

You'd waste more gas idling. I've read if you are going to idle for more than 30 seconds you will save gas by turning the car off instead of idling.

if your going to be turning the car onand off its alot easier on the car to leave it runing. If its justa 1 time thing shut it off.
my Tl idles all day long since its alot easier on it to idle than to turn on and off.

Look at it this way. When you arrived and didn't see the person waiting for you or coming out to the parking lot, you really don't know how long you would have been there. It might have been 20 minutes instead of 5. So, yes, turn your engine off and wait for your passenger.
