What to swap an LS1 in?

I am getting bored since it is winter and I have my 2500 mile original ls1 from my old gto that I sold and I am looking for a project. I was going to purchase my father in laws 944, but after driving it I decided not to so now I have this motor sitting here I am itching to do something.

suggestions?

FD RX-7 springs to mind, or find a high mile 968 to swap it into? Big improvements over the 944 with the 968.

Porsche 928 comes to mind too, but that requires a PhD in automotive electronics diagnostics and repair....

Good luck,
-Mirror

I will pass on the lotus, but the 968 is a good idea.

Jaguar XJ(fairly common to swap to Chevy V-8s for the '60s-70s Jags) or Miata (Ford small block switches a la "Monster" are pretty documented).

Compared to their contemporaries, yes- 4000 lbs for the sedans.
Most of the XJ and XJ-S owners did the conversion to get a more reliable running car that was somewhat faster, but not as competition for Camaros, 'vettes, 911s and the faster cars of the day. The Jags were different lux cars- v. a MB 6.9, for example.

Indeed.... and some of the owners discovered that a V-8 swap does not necessarily make for a reliable Jaguar. Joseph Lucas, the prince of darkness.

A monster miata uses a small block ford, the small block chevy is taller and is MUCH harder to squeeze into a miata, not saying it hasn't or can't be done but its not easy or cost effective.

This is a tough question, while I am a fan of a monster miata its just not worth the headache doing it with a small block chevy. If your not looking for the fastest thing going, but want an unusual sleeper get a Volvo 240 wagon and put a blower on the LS1 and you've got a great sleeper on the cheap.

Thats a e36, the e39 is a 5 series.

If you were to do a e36 I would go with a 318ti, no one would expect it. There is a local guy with a LS1 swap in a Z3, that's another possibility.

I was hoping that idiot crashed the car into the building when he was doing donuts in that tiny parking lot.

That being said, I'd love a LS2 E36 M3
