What is a sleeper to you?

I'm not gonna name any names here, but it's not just on this forum either. A car will be for sale. You can see it's lowered, has rims, exhaust, and a s/c - turbo, and someone will say, "nice, a sleeper". How the fuck would that be a sleeper? If the person with the car, posted a video, you would easily hear the exhaust and the supercharged whine or wooosh from the turbo, leading to not being a sleeper.

To me, a sleeper would be a pos car or a stock one at that, with spray. Nothing else led to believe the car is heavily modified.

Or a pos car or a stock car thats sounds stock but has some go fast mods that doesnt really change the sound of the motor or exhaust.

am I wrong or are people just retarded and dont know what they're talkin about?

A sleeper? Usually an older family car that has an engine/tranny swap. Preferably with as few external mods as possible.

Example: A 15 or 20 year old Accord with a H22 motor swap

Now I will agree with that.

take a stock CLS for the hell of it, put a 75 shot on there and I think it's a sleeper.
But if a CLS with tint, lowered, exhaust, rims, and a s/c with gauges on the pillar is not considered a sleeper to me like some seem to think.

Guess I'm kinda old school.

Late 80's Impala with steel wheels with a nondescript one colour paint job. High performance small block chevrolet under the hood in an excellent state of tune. Heavy duty suspension and brakes as well. Or maybe a crown vicky with a high winding 302 and suspension to match. Anything that looks plain but sounds otherwise. I think pre '94 notchback 5.0 Mustangs fall into this category as well. Newer cars? I love the current GTOs, sans rear spoiler, with their subdued exteriors and great powertrains and suspensions.

I met a guy with an old CRX, around 85 or so. It was the HF version, basically it was meant to get 50+ mpg and has no go whatsoever. Well, he has a B20/B18 turbo monstrosity swap. NO external mods whatsoever, even had the HF badges on it. I'm sure he surprised a few people.

I think of a sleeper as a car that LOOKS completely stock, but is a beast within.

I think it was a thread I saw on here,

It was a early to mid 90's subaru wagon that looked like sombody trashed it for 10 years, but had a completely built engine and the rest of the drivetrain was spec'ed to match.

Yeah, econoboxes make the best sleepers...

I've seen some nice ford pintos on the web with a 2.3L turbo swap, but they usually spoil it with aftermarket wheels, etc... I've see people send 2 sets of stock wheels out to make one set of wide ones, so they can run wider tires in the back, but still be able to run the stock hubcaps

But the ones I like the best are the dodge/chrysler turbo minivans (like this):

I think I saw on this board somewhere ... a guy modified a Chrysler minivan ... turbo'ed and takes it to the strip. The exterior looks like a POS rust bucket with the faux woodie siding. I think it does something like high 11s/low 12s in the 1/4 mile. THAT ... is what I'd call a sleeper!

The new Subaru Legacy 2.5GT and Forester 2.5 are sleepers. The stock ones run 0-60 under 6 seconds, and 1/4 miles under 14 seconds.

With very little money (a chip), you can make both even faster.

And yet, both car look like a family mom soccer car.

A sleeper is when you have a car that looks utterly stock but the internals have been changed or modified to completely different from original setup.
A sleeper that when a sports car like Mustang GT, or GTO revs at you and then you dust him easily.
A sleeper is when you have a car that look stock on the outside and upon racing, your car starts to spool or whine and make the other drive feel like a fool.

I agree and I disagree. A corvette itself is not a sleeper because of its stock HP that comes with it. I mean, if I pulledup next to a C6, I'd think he'll dust me regardless what he's got in there

In addition to locking "stock"(if not abused), a sleeper also must not appear fast-- think Q-ship-- a non-enthusiast looks at it and doesn't realize it is fast. This is where the Pintos with 302s and turbos come into play. A Corvette will never be a sleeper, whereas a Volvo 240 with a 5.0 would be. Many enthusiasts will notice changes in wheels, exhaust tone or lowering, though, so I'm not sure how that fits into "sleeper."

Any "family car" or mid "luxury coupe" that can take on a "fast" or "sports" car on fairly even terms (or leave one for dead) would be a sleeper-- thus a vinyl-roof Dodge Valiant with a 340 4-Barrel and a 4-sp. is a sleeper, while a Challenger with the same engine/drive train is not. The Subie turbos would be sleepers if they didn't have the hood scoops. No "tuner cars," e.g. AMG MBs, can be a sleepers.

Nowadays, I don't know if "sleepers" applies to any new cars, what with Accord V6s, Legacies, TLs, Camrys and many other 4-doors making 240+ horsepower and sub-7.0 second 0-60 times.

This is exactly what the original poster is complaining about...

yeah, No one would ever think that a Screaming Yellow C6 Z06 w/ 500hp (in stock trim) would be a fast car

Well not necessarily. Of course most of anyone without a Corvette is gonna know they will get spanked so it's not considered a sleeper to them.

What if a real stock C6 Zo6 pulls up to him and just thinks they are both stock. This yellow one smacks the doors off the stock one. If I owned the zo6 that lost, would think that was a sleeper vette.

The Accord V6 6MT is a terrific example of a sleeper....too bad my AV6 5AT is more of a snoozer. but .

Any Z06 does not qualify as a sleeper to me. The 12-second turbo Caravan, yes. An old Civic with a turbo'd, tuned K-series motor, yes. A TL/TL-S (the 3G one less so) or LGT, sure why not?

Do you guys understand what I'm saying though?

A zo6 turbo'ed is not a sleeper to us, but a zo6 turbo'ed to other stock zo6's is a sleeper. Make sense?

yea i guess u can classify that as a sleeper as it falls under the criteria. but imo, sleepers also needs to be nice cars. like, doesnt need to Have to be fast stock, but just nice civics. like those volvo videos, like that tiburon, like scion, or like my stock lookin tsx owning up an m3 (i wish~)

I guess my car can be a sleeper? I guess you'll have to ask all of those civics, del sols, camrys and corollas, I'm quite sure they were surprised

I've been told that my SHO is one of the most ultimate sleepers, I agree too. For somebody who isn't familiar with it, think it's just another Taurus.

95% of the people that ask me about my car NEVER expect to see a 5 speed in a Taurus, let alone that motor in a Taurus...

I bought a new SHO in 1989. It was actually quicker than the 5.0 LX I traded in for it. I loved its stealthy look. I agree its a great sleeper.
