Thumbs down What a shame!!!

Got a call earlier today from my dad's friend who lives in Jersey and said that he got home around 4am yesterday from the firehouse and noticed that his 03 TL-s was sitting on blocks. they took everthing. Wheels, headlights, taillights, navi, stearo, seats, doo r panels, airbags, gadge cluster, fog lights. he works at the firehouse and works late sometimes. felt really bad for him specially since he owns the car and only has libality insurance. BTW same guys hit another car the same night up the block from him.

Its the car theft capital of NJ if not the nation....My friend won't drive to work (she works for Prudential in Newark), she takes the train instead....

Damn...that sucks so bad. I couldn't even imagine that. It seems like Cali is a terrible place to live if you're worried about car theft. Check out this article from MSN. The three columns on the left rank the city out of 366 so you can check out where you're city ranks. http://moneycentral.msn.com/content/...ar/P127134.asp

well asked him details and he said that his wife went some where in the day and when she came back she didn't park in the garage and left it in the driveway. i mean it wasen't even on the street. how can they be so quite about it. the funny thing is that he said everthing looked like it was taken out very nicely. no scratches or broken parts anywhere. they left the front bumper in the driveway cuz they had to take out the headlights.

On a serious note, I go to school in a quiet part of Queens, NY. The other night I parked right next to a brand new 3 series bimmer to attend a 1.5 hr class. Upon my return I noticed both front windows of the bimmer were smashed, the glove box door was open and the air bag was stolen out of the steering wheel. I feel bad for whoever the owner of that ride is....

This is the reason I will sell my CLS & get a beater if I ever move back to NYC.
A religous firend I have parked his BMW in Queens as well a few years agao. They smashed his window & took eveything that was of value including his bible. Crazy!

In todays world, why would one have an Acura and not have full coverage on it. It sucks that he lost all that, but come on. Why would one not have a pretty new car and not have full coverage?

If you can't afford full coverage, you shouldn't be driving a new Acura.

We have a term for these peoples, proffesionals. I've seen guys pull up outside a chop shop with a mid 90s S-Class and a few hours later they had everything pulled out nicely.

You are correct, but I have a feeling if you were to add up all the stolen cars that end up in Newark I'm pretty sure they would be number 1. Lots of stolen cars from nice areas around Newark wind up at the Newark Port to be shipped out or just wind up going to a chop shop there.

No problem over here. I work in the Iron Bound section of Newark. It's still really shady, but it's a lot safer. I would never had gotten the CL if we didn't have a gated parking lot where I work.

While not everyone can afford full coverage I don't understand how someone can afford to own outright a 2003 TLS and not keep it fully insured. It sucks but you have to wonder what he was thinking by having liability coverage only on that type of car.

i called and got my car fully insured 2 days before i picked up my TL. i knew that i was buying a car that gets hit alot aruond this area and i wasnt gonna take any chances. the time when i bought my TL, was when the headlamps were being stolen from dealer lots because of the HID's in them.. plus TL and maxima's has the worst brackets that hold the headlamps in place. it breaks off in two snaps, plus the tabs that hold the headlamps are made of cheap plastic.

i live in jersey city (10 minutes from newark), BUT i live in a fully gated community. full 24 hour gatehouse security, two security patrols, and cameras at every corner.. plus i park inside an underground parking garage. the thing is, once i leave my home and drive out to work i know there's always disaster around the corner. i hate the areas im around too. Newark, Paterson, and Jersey City.. i hear about car theft every where..

im 20 and i pay for my full coverage. if i dont mind working my ass off to secure my car, i dont see why anyone else cant. especially if you live in this area..

Not for nothing, but if you have a car in Newark, you should expect theft....

The point is if you can't afford the cost associated with the vehicle, then you can't afford the vehicle.

However, I will say that your insurance payment is insane. Must be because of the area.

Being able to buy the car and being able to afford the car are two different things. There's a lot more included in the "can i afford the car" equation.

As an example you can buy an older used 911 porsche for cheap. But would you be able to afford the al of the required maintenance? Afford the insurance? probably not...

Paying $2k+ a year in insurance for a $12k car is insane. Do you have a bad driving or credit record?

People tend to live past their means in this country... just because you can afford to purchase something doesn't mean you have the ability to properly maintain it. Hence you shouldn't have it if you can't afford it... but some people think image is more important that financial security...

I on the other hand can NOT comprehend the logic behind the risk of losing your car completely to save a few dollars a month in insurance. So lets say you save what $30 a month. Your risking your $12,000 car to save yourself $340 a year? That doesn't seem like a good bet to me... if that $340 breaks you, then you can't afford the car.

Saving $340 a year it would take you 35 years to get your $12k back, and if I calculate that with inflation it'd take even longer.

Welcome to NY/NJ car insurance. Add being under 25 and you'll pay out your ass for full coverage on anything but a tricycle.

ya I travel to NJ every month for a week. NJ people drive like idiots and 70% of the cars I see on the road are fucked up in one way or another. And I'm also aware some insurance companies will not insure people out here because of the asshat drivers.

Adding comprehensive can't be that much more. Or he should drop to a car he can afford full coverage on. The real problem here is he wants something he can't obviously afford. Read my last two paragraghs above.

I flew into Newark this week, I'm out in Bedminster now... leaving here in a bit to get food in Jersey City.
