what do you guys think of 2002 audi A8?

i'm getting married in 3 months and i wanna get a big comfy used luxury car around 15-18k. there is an audi A8 near me(i'm in a lake county, chicago right now) with 65k miles on it. it's clean and man, i always loved a8's understated design. also i found several ls400 under 70-80k miles but it's bit more than my price range. also XJ's are very cheap and i always loved classy jaguars.

well, would you ever buy a previous gen luxo flagships? like 740il, ls400, q45, s430, JX8 and etc? i really want something comfy especially for the people who will sit in the back. in laws(3 of them) will come visit chicago from korea frequently and i want them to be comfortable. we are going to live near gurnee(45miles north of chicago) and they will want to go visit downtown alot.

or just forget about it and get a used g35 or something smaller but under 40-50k miles? i really want a v8 though.. i'm even considering a caddy deville. lol

well, what do you guys think?

For me to get a used car like that it would have to be something I really wanted but couldn't afford. You know it is going to be expensive to maintain, its an expensive German car. So unless you've loved it since you saw an S8 in Ronin or something I would get something with lower miles. Good luck

The German choices you list are complicated, expensive to fix, and not nearly as reliable as they should be. Sad to say, but its true. If I had to do it, I'd go with a '98-'01 Mercedes E class. The BMW and A8 could potentially destroy you with repair and unscheduled maintenence costs. The LS400 would be ideal if you could swing it.

I love the A8. Love it. But fixing it scared the shit out of me.

I'd only buy one if I was making enough money that I was throwing it into a car rather than on hookers and coke.

Well maintained E classes are extremely easy to find. It is such an international staple bulletproof

Be sure you can only buy the car but also be able to AFFORD it. I'm guessing maintenance on an older 60k audi will be expensive as shit

+1 on the Q, seems the most modern as far as interior design goes... How about an '02-'04 RL? VERY reliable.

If you can get an 01 or newer LS 430 jump on it. My uncle has that car and is one of the most amazing cars ever. It averages 20 MPG or better and I swear you go off roading and that thing is so smooth you wouldnt even know it. You seriously cant even tell the car is on while driving it because its so silent. Also have outstanding reliablity. Granted the styling isnt anything special everything else in the car is.

If you could talk them down on the price a little bit that would be an AWESOME car.

Depends how different A8s and A4s are. My lil bro has a 2001 A4 with 70,000 some miles on it. It hasn't had any real problems, it turns out timing belts and water pumps don't have to be done to 105k. If you know someone who can do maitance on an audi and keep up to date with reliable pricing I say go for it. Plus Audis are probably more reliable then mercedes and jags.

The LS, while rather simple/bland looking, is an awesome car. Best car in that class IMO.

And while I love the design and styling of German cars, they're just too expensive to maintain. Wanted an A4, but the cost of maintenance scared me.

A4's have been pretty reliable over the last few years. A6's have started coming around too... as have the A8's. Unfortunately the 8's only just started coming around.

So, I'd stay far away from a 2002 A8. If you were talking 2005 or 2006 it would be a different story, but no way I'd look at a 2002. Even then I'd be a little nervous as the 8's still have a way to go before they catch up with the A4's as far as reliability.

I absolutely LOVE the last gen M45. I almost bought one on three separate occasions!

You simply cannot go wrong with either the Q45 or the M45 you posted earlier.

That is correct, however, in Japan Nissan has an exact copy of the old M45 which I believe they called the Nissan Gloria.

The Current gen M45 is called the Nissan Fuga 450GT.

You are not mistaken...city/hwy mix is about 17 mpg. That's 10 less than my CL-S.

Most of the cars on his list aren't much better though.

I'd still take one.

OP chungkopi wanted a car to take his family around, which means he needs room in the back.
The previous generation M45 was a nice driving car, but has a fairly small interior. It seemed to have less rear legroom than the TSX, let alone the CL-S, when I rode in the back with average size people in front and rear.

Man, I didn't think it was that bad at all the few times I drove one, but perhaps you're right...

It's even more sad when you compare it to the CL. Granted, the CL isn't exactly tiny for a coupe, but it's a freakin 2-door coupe for pete's sake!

The exterior is fairly good sized, but not the interior.
By the way, the front isn't very spacious either, and I don't think anyone over 6'1" will fit at all.
It's a nice-driving car though, and I personally prefer the exterior design to that of the present M35/M45 (although I do like the G35 sedan's looks!).

From those choices, I'd look at both the Lexus'. The Maxima will lose too much value over time and the e430 may be due for a nice fat 60K service. Careful......
