What car for mommy in the 20-25k range?

Sorry for starting another one of these threads but this is a little different since its for my MOM. Someone who isnt into speed or handling.

Her 98 Altima is finally giving her issues at 72k miles.

Doesnt want to spend more than $25k on a new car, could even be slightly used a year or so.

Size matters :gheylaugh: so something not too large since she seems to "accidentally" bump into things. Even with a small car like her 98 altima.

Something FWD or AWD.

Can a new TSX be had for $25k after some haggling?

If you can find a leftover '06, I don't think $25k is out of the question. Would be more difficult for an '07 this time of year, though.

Yea im looking through https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...828#post664828

Name or Screen Name: Trekman8
Country/State/City of purchase: Arlington Heights, IL
Last 5 digit of Vin:
Color Ext/Int: Silver / Quartz
Month/Yr of purchase: 1/07
Price paid before tax/lic: $24,943
Model Yr of TSX: 2006 (built 9/06)
Transmission: AT
Navi/Non-Navi: Non

Score! Im actually impressed how well the TSX is holding in value. Even slightly used ones are still up there in price.

Yeah I was going to say the TSX. You get a lot of what you pay with it. I also heard its one of the best cars out there to hold its value and TSX owners really havent had any major problems so I would diffenently say the TSX. Now the TSX takes high grade gas where as the altima im gonna guess took regular would your mom mind that? Besides that I say if that doesnt bother her go see what dealers have on left over 06s.

Mid Model range of the 07 Accord or Camry

Or could get a used 06 High Model range

Accord is one of the best Mommy cars. Easy to drive, doesn't burn much gas and they seldom break.

A good used one (certified) can be had from the dealers for a reasonable price.

i doubt he'd be looking at this year range but the accords from 98-02 have major issues with the tranny failing. the newer ones however are free of any major problems.

I just went out and helped my mom pick out a car. I knew the perfect car right off the bat: 07 accord. 4 cyl. She doesnt need the extra power. It has great mileage, great reliability, good room, good ride, holds its value extremely well.

Picked it up for 21k

Hyundai Sonata Limited...fully loaded with standard V6, leather, six airbags, skid control, ABS, and optional sunroof and 6-CD changer; $25,645 out the door. And you can probably talk them down from that; not to mention the killer warranty!

Don't buy a Hyundai. Valve adjustments are expensive.

Get her a RAV4 V6 FWD and let torque steer own her.

She is giving up on a car with only 72k? That Altima must be one nightmare with those low miles.

I have posted this before: Open Road Honda of Edison, NJ quoted me (via Instaquote) a price of $24.7k for a leftover 06 Accord V6 EX-L w/Navi. <--- canNOT go wrong here. (While the exterior styling is debatable, my wife loves the interior of our 07 Accord.) It definitely a mommy car but, it has enough pickup and handling to integrate some sportiness. The wife already drives it MUCH more than she ever did my Maxima; looks like our Murano is now my primary whip.

my mother bought one of the last 05 tsx's brand new off the boat from japan for 25,400 out the door... w/o navi and auto. So they can be had for around 25k if you get them when the next model year is about to come in.

Low miles yes, but its also a 9 year old car that she abuses. Its been in a few accidents already and 2 out of 4 doors dont even open.

She doesnt want a SUV, even if its compact.

Well the build quality worries me on the american made Accord. I would think the TSX would feel better in the long run like my dads RL. Is the TSX really that slow with the 4banger?

By all accounts 06-07's are considerably quicker due to the 10-15 added HP. But if speed isn't a concern who cares. She'll be getting a great car that looks sharp, is safe, good on gas and handles great.

I wouldn't be worried about the Accord because its built in the US. That argument can't hold water anymore.

Well I lurk the TL section and the TSX section and it seems the TL guys are always complaining about rattles much more.

Camry is too big for her I would think. Ill take her to see it though, might as well show her the Accord too. I just know she wont want to go many places so i need to figure this out for her.

Were those TL's are 04's?

My 2 04 TSX's that were built in Japan rattle like crazy and have had alot of little problems. No doubt many were first year built related issues but still built in Japan.

And TSX's have rattle issues as well, I was just reading a thread this morning over in TSX where an 07 owner was complaining about rattles. That along with alot of 06 owner complaints.

Yea i guess no car is perfect.

Accord
Basic: 3 yr. / 36,000 mi.
Drivetrain: 5 yr. / 60,000 mi.
Rust: 5 yr. / Unlimited mi.

vs

TSX
Basic: 4 yr. / 50,000 mi.
Drivetrain: 6 yr. / 70,000 mi.
Roadside: 4 yr. / 50,000 mi.
Rust: 5 yr. / Unlimited mi.

Now would the accord be a better buy even if the TSX has a longer warranty?

How important is a V6 and navi to her..

Is there a big difference between the TSX and i4 accord?

Test drive

40 HP that apparently doesn't feel like 40. The Accord actually weighs less. I'm not up to speed on Accord specs but I think it more or less has everything the TSX does except Xeons, bluetooth(?) and maybe the Aux connection? Although I'm sure F23A4 could answer to that.

I think the 4 banger TSX is perfectly adequate, and your mom might be fine with it, too, especially if you think she'd be fine with a 4 banger Accord. I'd think the TSX would be faster than a 4cyl Accord, but I don't know the numbers. The TSX feels very light and nimble, which she'd probably really like (I know I do!). I'd stay away from the Camry....sounds like it's been having issues which would scare me, like the tranny thing.

The camry isn't THAT big, but it does appear to be so.. at least from the outside. I think the TSX would be a great option as well if she doesn't mind the size. I was fairly close to picking one up, but my wife negated the deal when I brought it home (she thought it was too small). I ended up bringing it back to the dealer who was obviously disappointed. He thought he had a deal when I asked him to let me bring it home for a test drive and to show my wife....

As I mod one of forums within the TL board I can say there were far more rattle/headliner/misc. complaints on the 04 TL than with the 05-07 models. First year jitters indeed.

Crazy Sellout, I was always a proponent for going with the vehicle that has the J-vin#. But, I came away fairly impressed with the 7G Accord after my first test drive of an 06 model late last year. I am no less impressed with my 07 model and I anticipate trouble free ownership for the next 36 months.

The Camry is actually a large car. It was larger than our RL or our 2003 Altima we had. It is a very comfy LARGE car. But its built with very poor quality all over. The only thing that was nice was the seats.

My dad has an '07 Camry and has had no problems thus far. Pretty solid car, but not as roomy or comfortable as my RL. There may be a bit more leg room in the rear, but not by much...if at all.

If it breaks down at all, its my ass.

I too have heard plenty of camry owners who are happy with their cars. So a few bad experiences wouldnt sway me away from it. But again, it might be too big for her. I need to run around to dealers and get brochures to show her.

Then stay away from a 1st year model.

While I'm sure the Camry will prove reliable, it looks cheaply put together IMO as well. Better than alot of other cars out there mind you, but not up to Camry standards.
