People plunk down huge amount of cash to get the bigger and powerful motors for their taste (and for some bragging rights) so it is hard to define a top of the line Audi or any luxury model as a sleeper !!! People should expect it to be fast....
Anyhow I think a supercharged CTS-V should have been on the list ....

all i got to say to that is Volvo S60R. that car the ultimate sleeper. everyone thinks Volvo=safe, soccer mom kind of car. the S60R will scoot stock.

^ I would actually play devil's advocate and say most of the S models are sleepers. To the casual observer, they couldn't tell the difference between an A8 and an S8 9 times out of 10. We can, but most of the public could not...

both the 335 and CTS-V are give a ways as fast cars.
the CTS-V is a dead give away when it's faster than a C63 and M3.
the 335 i no surprise it's fast when it's (in my opinion) a good competitor with the TL type S.
a sleeper is looking at it you wouldn't know the the thing hauls ass. but when you drive it or run against it at a track you're shocked.
the ultimate sleeper i saw is this early early 90s Chevy Caprice Classic Wagon looking at it look like all it had was custom wheels and a small drop ncie black paint job some light chrome.
i thought thoght this car is "grandma's wagon" be lucky to turn a 15
The dude pulled a stock 350 v-8 and dropped in a previous generation Vette Z06 (405 crank hp) but he had a couple bolt ons with it so he said he was probably at 450 hp.
that FUCKER WAS DOING HIGH 13s on street tires.

Has anyone actually read the article? Motortrend says these cars get the least attention from police. They fit in with the rest of the crowd and don't seem like cars a person would speed in.
The Chevy HHR SS and Buick Lacrosse Super are really good sleepers. Same with the Volvo V-8.

If they count buying used cars today? then the GTO should be on the list. its the best hp per dollar you can buy and most casual persons think its a big grand prix. just my two cents
and saab/volvos should not be forgotton

if that was the articles intent they are right. however my mom's odyssey should be on the list then!

Saab brand next to go.
probably the best bang for your buck as far as HP for sedan is G8 GT.

This is why I think the Forrester is a great sleeper car because it's got a strong motor, and most don't expect it to be fast. At least the last gen, don't know much about the new one.
#63
that is very true, but in this context don't you think it's more about a run-of-the mill car that people don't expect to be fast. Audi S cards aren't run-of-the mill regardless if people recognize them or not.

Case in point... Audi A4's are everywhere. Audi S4, completely different car... and most people couldn't tell the difference, therefore, the S4 would qualify as a sleeper b/c the majority would just think it was another A4.
Now, going as far as calling the S8 a sleeper may be a stretch b/c the A8 itself is no slouch, but for the A4/A6 - S4/S6... I'd say yes.
And yes, last gen Forrester was a good one as well.

I dont see any Audi as a sleeper. I think the 6mt accord is a sleeper as well as the cobalt, but mostly because like said, I preconceive them(cobalt) to be a pos, that basically is a cavalier with round tail lights. What about a bone stock SRT4? for the longest time I didnt think there was such a thing as a fast neon.
As someone else said, new cars shouldnt even get to be sleepers, especially like the ones on that list. To me a sleeper is a car that looks normal, boring even but has been modified mechanically but not aesthetically, which then kicks the shit out you and leaves you embarrassed.

^ thats one of the most flashiest cars i've seen, especially with those hood scoops
when someone says sleeper, I immediately think RS4. at a casual glance, looks exactly like a normal A4.
What about AMGs? I'd love an E63 wagon.

Now THAT is a sleeper.

Exactly. The term "sleeper" really does mean a car that does not look like it has much, but can go like stink. Now, an Audi S/RS or BMW does not count in this, as they are made for performance. Basically people expect performance.
Now, a Subary Legacy? Absolutely a sleeper. My 3.0R is pretty quick, with a better torque curve than the turbo. And over here, the B4 (Legacy) GT has the 2.0L STI motor, and is 280 HP with a 6 speed. Very quick for a 4 door sedan.
Also, anything from Volvo that has the R designation could be called a sleeper. And I say that because nobody expects any performance out of a Volvo (except those in the know, hence sleeper).

lol i dont think a pontiac G8 GT is considered a sleeper with a 6.2 liter V8 at 361 hp and 0 to 60 in 5.7 secs for a heavy 4 door she holds her own now lets talk about the pontiac G8 GT GXP Edition coming out in 09 with 402 HP and 0 to 60 in 4.7..haha ttyl be safe...
i consider my 2007 honda accord EX-L V6 sedan to be a sleeper alot of ppl think its not quick but its got balls and hauls ass and for an automatic transmission to do 0 to 60 in 6.6 aint half bad.. and the six speed accord sedan that they made in 06 and 07 does 0 to 60 in 5.9 dont sleep on the HONDA ACCORDS..lol bye

i agree the legacy is a very nice sleeper, 4wd, sport modes, mods galore, SEDAN, simple and mature looking car. i really like it....
#73
Yes, but will a stock-looking 335i sedan (stock height, no 20's, no 5% tint, no fender/wheel well extensions, no hood or fender vents, no wings, no decals...) look that fast?? If not, then it's a sleeper!
#75
Exactly The more I read the replies in this topic, the more I think people don't realize what a sleeper is. 95% of the general public just look at it as another 3-series not realizing what the 335i is all about. They'll just relate it back to the days of the slower 325 and 328's. So to me a 335i is a great example of a modern day sleeper....
#76
So, how about a 318i that has an M badge instead of the real designation? ...Ha, reverse sleeper. You should start a new thread called that.
#77
well my list of recent sleeper cars:
CL (haha.. no one knows what it is)
mazdaspeed6
legacy spec.B
335i sedan
altima 3.5 sedan
S60R
i don't think the new accord coupe is a sleeper as such.. as it looks very aggressive

the new Accord v-6 6 speed is no joke dude.
#80
because coupes and sedans are 2 different things. it's almost expected that coupes are fast (and everyone knows that the J35 in the sedan w/ VCM is not even comparable to the J35 6speed in the coupe).
