went to acura dealership service dept....
Dropped off the car this morning for some warranty work. Rear-view mirror needed replacement, passenger side auto window up didn't work.
I get a call back from the dealership saying my brakes need replacement. I knew they did, and I have an appt tomorrow to take care of that with my local mechanic, but I am very surprised they took the wheels off to look at the brakes.
Now they are saying they won't give me the car back unless I sign something that says I know my brakes are bad.
Thoughts?

Ya a lot of Dealerships are doing that now. And I'm sure they didn't have to take your wheels of to check the brakes. They can tell.
Just sign it and take it to your mechanic and save yourself some money.

Did you ask them why the took the wheels off? They were to work on the other items of the car. Sounds like they're looking for upsales. I'd give them shit for doing stuff they weren't asked to do and I probably wouldn't sign a waiver. All they have to do is state on the w/o they recommend brakes be replaced. You have to sign that as to the other work done.

That's funny because when I asked them to look at my brakes (about 3 years ago) because they were becoming noisy they told me there would be a fee to just inspect the brakes.
This doesn't make any sense. Maybe they are hurting for business now. But I am not a fan of them taking the wheels off as I know the people who do that job don't care about putting the wheels on the ground with the face up.
Also, I am positive they took the wheels off because they told me the thickness of my pads. I don't think you can measure that without taking the wheel off.

Also, one of the things I went in for was the rear view mirror wouldn't stay up, it would fall every so often. Turns out they won't cover that under the acura care extended warranty I bought when I purchased the vehicle.
Anothere instance of how they profit from extended warranties.

This happened to me two weeks ago when I had my TB/WP replaced on my Legend, said my rear brakes needed work. I do that stuff myself but they didn't make me sign anything.

I dont know what you are really complaining about, They are inspecting your car and letting you know what they found. I would rather have them tell me something thats in need of repair than not looking at all.

If I tell them what work to do, that better be all they're doing. They're just trying to upcharge the repair work.

That is their business. You would be pissed if they didn't tell you and next thing you know, you need new rotors. Yes like McDonalds asking 'you want fries and a drink with that burger?' This is good business practices.

Besides, I also mentioned before when I asked them to inspect the brakes, and they quoted me 75 bucks just to look at them.
So it is a little strange they are doiing this for free unasked.

I'm guessing they're hurting for business.
I ended up signing the form, and also found out they did a 15-point inspection on the car without any cost. They must be really hurting.

I did, the only mention of the rear view mirror is the auto dimming. Since that's working fine the warrenty doesn't cover anything else related to the rvm.
They did quote me 200 bucks to replace it. Looks like I'm going to have do a hack job on it to make it stay up.

They quoted me for 400 bucks to replace front pads and refinish front rotors.
And 650 to replace rear pads, replace rear rotors and replace brake fluid.
Dropped off the car today at my mechanic. As you can tell I'm paying a fraction of that.

I never do work at any dealerships either because of the inflated prices. BUT I have seen a loyal customer get a new engine at 80K miles through goodwill warranty because all their maintenance was done at the dealer.
There are pros and cons to taking it elsewhere. I try to do as much as I can myself.

Are you sure they took the wheels off? It is pretty easy to check the pads without removing anything.
And I'm surprised to see that some people have a problem with this? When I was at a shop I'd always give a once over on a car to make sure there was nothing else that needed service/attention.

I generally put cars on the lift when I'd work on them, even if it was for stuff such as headlight replacement or something just on the topside. I wouldn't tear the car apart looking for problems but a quick once over was enough. If you are that paranoid about your car getting scratched don't drive it or take it anywhere.

Didn't say anything about tearing apart a car, if you hire someone to do a job, that's all they should do. Paranoid, no, but when repair centers use the newest garage monkeys to do the smallest jobs. There's worries, like fucking up someone's rims and using a drying towel with pebbles in it to dry off someone car, when you have told them not to wash the car.
