VW's 2.0T GTI motor
VW's 2.0T GTI motor
I am considering gettting a 09 GTI when my lease is up. I've never owned a turbo car. If say at 75k the turbo goes out how much is the cost to repair it? Is the 2.0T bulletproof like a Honda motor meaning it will last longer than the desire to own the car?
The motor is the sweetest 4 cylinder I've ever drove recently. The sound of the turbo is so addicting.
I've test driven lately
09 WRX-sounds horrible to me like a hair dryer built for king kong, crude shifter and heavy clutch
09 Civic SI-awesome shifter and clutch, too much work to make it go
08 Sentra SE-R spec V and non Spec V-bland, plush ride in the non spev V, no excitment at all

The turbo won't go out at 75k. All car manufacturers tune down their engines for the optimum engine life. You will be able to go well over twice 75k on your car, even after it is chipped, if you so decide, as long as you maintain your car regularly.
There are a few GTI owners/leasers on this board.
<---myself included.
The Mark V GTI is by far leaps and bounds ahead of the Mark IV in terms of quality and performance. I have seen on many other boards peeps with Mark V GTI's already past 75k with no troubles.
My Mark V has been 100% trouble free.
PM me if you have questions.

2.0t is a tank. The turbo should last over 100k miles as long as you do scheduled oil changes.
EVen if you need to replace the turbo it should cost around $700 at an independent shop. Not complicated at all in that engine.

I like the GTI, had a 99 VR6 back in the day, was fun to drive and was only rated at 173hp. I think the current output is a tad low and would test out all possibilities, especially the mazdaspeed 3. If you don't like the wrx(09), that may be the best bang for the buck.
I'd be pissed if I bought the GTI and the next year they up the output by 40hp like they did with the WRX.

I'm having a hard time parting with my Car if I decide to return back to Honda. I'm an engine guy at heart and its painful to part with that great V6 in my car. I like small displacement motors, tend to rev smoother. The growing displacement war is not that appealing to me. Thats why I like that VW motor so much, revs so fast with the lightweight feel.

I would wait a year and get the 2010. The drivetrain is fantastic. Smooth, fuel-efficient, and filled with power ANYWHERE in the powerband. Not to mentioned, DSG makes it 10x better!

2.OTFSI is a great engine, I work at a Acura dealer and 3 of us have GTi/R32s and none of us have had ANY problems. We do get sh!t from other people in the shop for driving them.
One of the guys has every possible bolt on aside from the upgraded DSG clutches, high pressure fuel pump and larger turbo. His car makes amazing power and the DSG is great.
My MKIV R32 hasn't had any issues at all, and I'm in the high miles. No TFSI thou, VR6

the newer 09 gti's are actually thoroughly impressive. those motors are sstrong and can pack a punch when modded.
although being that its a euro car, things start to get pricey with regular basic maintences and when it comes to building for more power or suspension modification. but when done right, it does pay off.
the 09 wrx is a beast. brutal acceleration, that comes in harsher than the sti and the boxer motor itself sounds amazing. when mated with a turboback exhaust system and whichever tune you decide to go with, they power increase is definitely noticeable.
the interior on the 09 is a nice upgrade too. the fit and finish has definitely gone up since the last one and the seats are really comfortable.
the gti would make a nice refined city/commuter/daily car and the wrx would make a better all-year-round performance car.

you don't have to worry about reliability, that engine is used all across europe in audi's, vw's, skodas and many more. i personally don't care too much for the character of the engine but it pulls very strong from the lower end. i would probably get a mazdaspeed3, but i put it neck and neck with the gti in my mind.

I'll agree with whoever said GTI for a refinement and WRX for performance. The older STi's I've driven have brutal suspension, and the WRX is slightly better in comfort, though apparently the new ones are more refined than the old ones.
Sorry but the Subaru 2.5T > the 1.8T, 2.0T and the 2.3T
just can't beat that boxer rumble.
Where to begin
