On Friday I drove my Mini and the GTI back to back. The ride on the GTI is so much better than the Mini. I did also take the lowering springs off, so it was back to stock height...
Speaking of which, anyone looking for a set of used Eibach Pro Kit springs and an H&R RSB for their GTI?
As for the reliability of the car, it really wasn't bad. Other than the spontaneous "Check Engine" light illuminations that apparently had to do with the 93 gas I was putting (I'll never go to Gulf again-and when I stopped going there the light never came back on), and the appetite my car had of making the engine coolant disappear (even after a half dozen trips to the dealer they found nothing wrong, no leaks, no nada), I just got used to having to add more coolant to the car every 45-60 days or so (about 16-20oz every time) and I was fine with that. Oh well..

My VW has been pretty reliable, however I have the newer motor of the 2.0T. The biggest issue really is the DSG transmission. The car moves solidly with full boost at low RPM, my biggest gripe is that the power noticeably dies down towards the top end.
I will say that the services are rather expensive, although they are at 10K mile intervals so it isn't to bad. Next service due at 40K miles will be a modest $600 or so. To give you an idea of what kind of maintenance I've had in the past and pricing (20K service, Oil change, 10 point inspection, tire rotation $350, yeah you get the idea).
I need to change my brakes as well 27K miles (My '06 TL had the same brakes til I traded it in at 45K miles), goes to show what kind of treatment the Jetta has had, lol. With respect to the brake job, I know I am in for a real shocker it'll probably be a $1K nightmare.
If it ends up being that much, and since I also need new tires I will probably just get a new car.

What about an Audi? I just got a 2010 A4 and love it. 6MT of course but the luxury is a step up from the 2005 TL I had. Miss the NAv though...but being able to play dvd's is great and the fuel mileage is spectacular, and I don't drive too easy either.
I got bitten by the VW bug (pun not intended) when I was in Boston in December and my uncle loaned me his '08 Jetta. I put about 400 miles on it and found it to be a comfortable, solid, well-put together machine and I would love to drive a GTI.
