Vehicle Insurance Problem
Vehicle Insurance Problem
hi,
My mother tells me that the VIN# on her insurance card doesn't match the # on her vehicle registration card. so i'm assuming her car, an acura tl is technically not insured and hasn't been since she's been with the insurance company(2years). the last 3 digits of the # is wrong.
another problem is, the insurance agent misspelled her name on the insruance document but not the insurance card and was told by the agent "it'll be fine if the name is spelled correctly on the card" but not on the document???
i'm not sure why my mother never noticed this when she joined up with this insurance company but still, WTF? should she even drive her car anymore? the name and VIN# are both wrong. is there room for a possible lawsuit against them?
i'm not gonna mention the insurance company, but its a well known one.

get it changed asap. If your mom were to get into an accident, she might get in some trouble. Have everything changed to be proper to avoid being held responsible in the event of an accident. also your rates could be higher if the vin on the card has been totaled or in an accident.
yep, i told her to call and change it but she is gonna have a friend drive her to an agent tomorrow and speak with them in person(not the current agent, they're ridiculously unprofessional with that comment about the unnecessary correction of her name).
do you think they'll refund her for the premium she paid during the 2 years that she has been with them? . though i think its partly her fault for not noticing the error when she originally joined. but i'm not gonna mention that to her...

I work for an insurance company. My opinion is this. The little guys MIGHT not pay, but I doubt it. The big guys would pay. For the company I work for (the biggest and best in my opinion), the customer truly comes first. It is company policy to side with the customer (except when fraud is determined). It's a very weird thing to hear...I know...but not every company is out to get you. Especially if they aren't publicly held. If you insure with a mutual company, there's no gain for them to not pay your claim. They don't need to make money. Their only objective is to take in the same amount of premium that they pay out in claims. Of course to be safe, they must take in a little more, but they return it in dividends back to the policy holders if they've taken too much.
Just my
Just my
What company is this with? Is this the card as well as the declarations (the first several pages of the packet of insurance policy)?
Get it changed, but I would not worry about not being covered. Let's say there was an accident and she filed a claim and they denied coverage based on these typo's. If she were to take them to court, it would be a civil court and a civil court will rule against the insurance company because they denied insurance based on a technicality of a minor mistake(s) on their part. Such a minor technicality may get a murderer off a criminal case, but it won't get an insurance company off a civil case, and they know this and won't spend the time defending themselves to deny coverage when they know they will lose.
And most insurance databases on VINs can match up to vehicle make/model. When they gave her a quote and issued her policy, it was most likely the correct VIN, otherwise even 1 number off would bring up as "not found" or a completely different make/model, making it an OBVIOUS mistake that they should have caught or not have been able to issue a policy at all, so could this be a replacement card that was typed up by someone at a brokerage (which I find is common for the small brokerages...they have a generic template and manually type in the info from the records of the policy they have, which is asking for mistakes on insurance cards).
