Call your insurance agent or call the the NY DMV (RMV or whatever you guys call it over there)...
Someone should be able to tell you if NY offers the sales tax discount on private sales...

but often ppl forget the tax savings that they get from trading in a car (assuming the private sales tax saving things that GreenMonster mentioned doesn't exist-which I didn't know about until he told us).... That tax savings is, in most cases, enough to offset the price between trade-in and private sales... see the calculations in my previous post.
I've had enough car shopping in the past to know most of the tricks that the dealers play... but the tax savings is one thing a lot of ppl tend to neglect.
