NSX. I know the BMW may drive better and the Porsche may have more muscle... but the NSX is an exotic, and a soon to be extinct exotic too. Who knows, it may be worth something in 20 years!

other considerations to take...
The 996 (98~03 911's) are kinda being considered the step childs of the 911 line. The look of the car has been critisized by alot of enthusiasts and collectors. Many are forcasting that the 996 line will probably not be a huge collector's item for the future... my personal fave 911 line was the 993 (93~98).
The NSX is a oddity in the sports car world. It's the first true shot at a super car by the Japanese and might age well due to the possible discountinuation of the NSX line.
Just things to keep in mind...
Junkster, who would opt for a '98 911 turbo

Junkster - Man - you are right the '98 is hot. I much prefer the look of that generation (993) ... and based on a quick search of cars.com it looks like the used market likes it more too
Time to email my bro a link to this thread so he can read all the good discussion.

One of the think that drew my bro to the 996 vs. 993 is the interior. I checked it out and he is right .... the 996 interior is MUCH nicer (more modern looking). I really think he is gonna go with a 99-01 996 at this point
Time for me to get a test drive ... followed by adding a SC to my TSX

I don't really like the word investment in the initial query.
If it is a true investment I would suggest something from Maranello. Although they can be expensive to maintain they hit a flat spot in depreciation then appreciate, plus even a 348 (within the price range) is much sexier than an NSX/911/M3 to the majority of the population.
Of the three I would get the NSX since it will probably hold value the best, you did say investment and gave a price range.
BUT if you want to have fun with that $45k then call your local Lotus dealer and get in line, the Elise is more of s drivers car than the M, 9 and X combined.

wow, 45.5k for that thing?! Is that a bargain or WHAT?! You get the fun of a high-revving i4, a small, nimble body, a great tranny, and an exotic look and name. Ok, someone enlighten me on what the catch is for 45k?! Can my dad just go out and buy one of these right now, for example?
Edit; there is no reason why Honda should have declined Lotus' proposal. A 220 HP, 143 Lb/Ft. Torque brand new k20 would be soo much better than that Toyota crap (I heard from someone Honda said No to the deal)

CG - I agree ... I would prefer a dark grey or black myself
But otherwise, this thing is loaded (including hard top which is a huge plus). Time for provench to start earning some borrowing points with the bro

If going for the 996, go for a different color combo. Meridian Metallic or Seal Grey on the exterior and BLACK inside it. If you want a blue, pick Lapis Blue or Midnight Blue, but do so with a black or gray interior. Your particular pick has a hard resale.

I'm sure all those are nice cars to drive, but not a big fan of those style porsche headlights, the 2004 nsx looks cool but the previous gen looks dated in comparison with the flip up lights, and the m3 as nice of a car as it is, is kinda a familiar sight on the road.
Think I'd check out a 05 boxster when they hit the dealers. Too me, its better looking inside n out compared to the 99' 911.

Had a feeling the "exotic" would come into play with the boxster. Does anyone really feel the 911 or m3 are even close to exotics? Even with the NSX, a lot of people will not agree on it being near exotic or even recognize what it is on the road. Seriously, while a lot of people can recognize a yellow horse badge, they can't recognize the nsx, unless they think its some new prelude.
The lotus elise looks more exotic than anything under 100k, so if he were going for exotic looks, I'd definately say that car-rare, exotic looks, nice straight performance, unreal handling. Saw a dark tan one in lower merion the other day and it was the hotness sticking out in traffic.
As far as it being a base boxster, most likely it will be the base to fit his budget, but the base 05 starts at 43k which mean he could get the car loaded up, probably even with nav. Acceleration isn't bad at around 6.0 0-60 either with the mid-engine P handling.

Yeah ... the other big thing is depreciation curve. My brother (unlike me) is smart about staying on top of that curve. Seems to me a brand new Boxster owned for 2 years from brand new is gonna cost quite a bit of money (it has to dump quite a bit when driven off the lot just like any new car right? )
I just think it comes down to preference on NSX vs. 911. My brother is a huge German car fan ... he has a '99 4-door M3 right now and has owned 3-4 BMW's so he likes the German feel. It will be interesting to see what happends, but the 911 above that he found (in NY somewhere) seems to be quite the deal.

Sorry for the late reply.
It is indeed a bargain if you treat it like a weekend car and don't expect S2000 reliability, but then again there isn't much to break. As for your Dad it isn't that easy, the wait lists are long (some people waited for 2-3 even 4 years before the federal car was officially announced) but if you are willing to pay more than MSRP some dealers will deal. Wonderful car, I had to gove up my #12 on a wait list because my wife decided we needed to build the long promised vacation home NOW, and I couldn't complain since I just got an E46 M less than a year ago and the Elise was just to be a toy.

I have about the NSX is insurance, I checked into owning one before I bought my M3 and though I didn't shop insurance my agent gave me a very high rate for a 99, his "reason" was the all the aluminum in front.
