This thread just tells me that many states, or maybe all, need to improve our driver's license education, testing and approval methods. IMO these facts about under/oversteer are important enough to understand that it should be mandatory for everybody to know at least the basics before being allowed to drive ...cars or forklifts.

I liked this one and i agree. People should learn this before getting a license.

There's also a video of Vicki Butler-Henderson (of 5th gear) taking a FWD Alfa, RWD BMW 3, and AWD Audi on a skidpad and lane change exercise to show their behavior the limit. Can't find it on any of the video sharing sites though ...

here's tiff Needell teaching people how to crash. But he does go through some fwd and rwd driving thingies.

Easy:
Understeer = slow
Oversteer= fast
911= turn in plow..plow..off throttle...snap oversteer..on throttle..4 wheel drift until the front wheels unweight then plow... repeat
Get it right and you can be brilliantly fast, get it wrong and spend the day at the Armco hotel.

FWD cars tend to understeer because the front wheel load up and the car "pushes" wide in the front i.e. the front tires lose grip before the rears. The only time you can get a FWD car to oversteer is if your turning hard into a corner, and suddenly lift off the gas, or even worse, brake - this is known as lift-throttle oversteer and occurs because you suddenly unload the rear, and cause it to swing around. Most folks will rarely get their FWD vehicles into lift throttle oversteer conditions.
RWD cars can do both rather easily depending on driver input. If you pull an Eddie Griffin and come into a corner too hot, the front of the car should break traction first sending you into understeer. Conversely, if you in a corner, and you get on the gas too early you can induce oversteer, whereby the rear tires break traction sending you into oversteer.
Oversteer can be useful in certain performance driving situations and is also more satisfying for the driver. That said, it is also a more dangerous handling condition beause most folks don't know how to handle it. An amateurs reaction when a car begins to oversteer is to lift throttle and brake (as in lift-throttle oversteer in FWD cars). Bad move - this just makes the car rotate even faster, and your likely to end up spinning it. However, more experienced drivers can use this to their advantage in performance driving situations via trail braking whereby they get the car to deliberately rotate - I find it useful in tighter sections on the AutoX.
