TSX for G35 coupe

I'm thinking of trading in my 2004 TSX for a 2003 G35 Couple. I'll likely have to kick in a few more grand, which isnt too bad.

THoughts? Are there any big problems with the 2003 G35?

The thing that is making me hesitant is that I have had my TSX since day one and have babied it. I KNOW its in mint condition. Going with a used car I am rolling the dice.

But that extra HP and RWD is calling my name.

How many km's on the G?

Have you sat in one, the interior of the 03's was terrible. But I'd still say go for it. Just be prepared to trade it in again in a few years when the bambino's arrive.

Ya I dont like the interior. I just crave the ponies and rwd. My TSX has about 60k and the G35 will probably have a bit more (maybe 80k). Again thats with me kicking in a bit of money too. I'm just going by average prices I've seen.

Just remembered that Scrib did the exact opposite a few years ago. Lets hear his thoughts.

I think he did it cuz his wife couldnt drive stick and he had a baby on the way. Pretty sure he misses his G35

Oh and i wouldnt do it. Why spend more on a car with more mileage and thats a year older than your TSX.

If it was close to an even trade, then sure.

So you're trading for an older car, with more miles, and will have to pony up some cash?

Sounds like a bad idea to me. Hang on to the TSX for a bit longer and save up for a new car, or at least a newer one.

And potentially a lot more headaches since the car will be well out of warranty. Not worth the trade unless the car has an extended warranty and the difference in money is minimal. Even then, it's not the best deal in the world.

Can you get by with what you have? Is the G35 all you want or are you going to want to trade again in a year?

If you're going to trade again in another year you're better off just saving the bucks and getting what you really want.

If it's what you really want.....and have considered all pros and cons....go for it! Enjoy the ride.

Are you also prepared to deal with a higher mileage car? Potentially more repairs, no warranty coverage, etc.? Afford the extra gas? Higher insurance premiums? Afford a set of wheels & snow tires (going to assume you'll use snows on a RWD car here)? Plan on keeping the car for a long time? Have you read up on the long-term reliability forecast of that model year?

If you don't plan on keeping the car a long time, I don't see the point in shelling out all the extra money to enjoy it for only a short while.

yea, i'm gonna vote on a neh for this one too. my roommate has an 06 which is pretty sweet and i used to lurk on g35driver.com all the time before i bought a tl. these things are like the tl's, the older they are the more rattles they have. my roommates already has a ton of rattles and it's about a year and a half old. drives pretty sweet though!!

as for big problems, tire feathering (along with the Z) and excessive oil burning come to mind, although i think the revup engines have more oil burning problems than the earlier models. one huge negative is that the '08 coupe will be out within i think 6 months or so, so the bodystyle of the car u just traded AND kicked in some cash for will be a little dated.

If you really want to do this trade then I would wait until 08 model comes out. The price will drop like a mofo. I would also suggest getting 05. God, I hate the 03 interior!!! so crappy.

How many miles on it when totaled? Been looking at a G35, since it does not look like Lexus will be making a IS Coupe, except for the big $$$ -F model.

My thoughts EXACLTY,

Spring for the 05, but wait until this summer when the next gen coupe comes out.
I'm going to trade my CL-S in for an 05 G35 this summer/fall. Can't wait!

I've thought about doing the same thing with my CL... but I don't want to pony up the cash (yeah, the CL is a depreciation pig)....

I just can't see going backwards into a older car with more miles...

I've got 55,000 miles on my CL, I'm the original owner, it's paid off, so I'm just gonna let it ride... RWD will be next, but who knows what else will be out (hopefully a rwd acura coupe in 09?? ).

fdl -- I debated countless times to trade in my TLS for a g35 coupe. The interior wasn't my cup of tea (as you have already stated). At this point in time ... you've taken the brunt of the depreciation for any car. Might as well ride it out a couple more years (depreciation curve flattens out) and get a new(er) car.

Wait and see what the second gen G coupe looks like ... might cause the 1st gen coupes to go down in resale value. (or the Altima coupes could do the same, as well ... )

EDIT -- I see you've already come to your senses ...

I agree, wait for the '08 to come out and then snag an '03 or '04 for cheap. I have a TSX loaner today and I know where you are coming from. Both cars are completely different. It's nice having RWD and that extra power at your disposal. Being able to compare both, I think I would rather want a G35c for that reason. I could live with the G35 interior if it had navi.

Twice during '06 have I considered trading my TSX for a G35c.... The first deal was a '04 with premium package with ~32k miles for $27k.... the second was a private party for a '04 also with premium with ~28k miles for $26k.

With tax and everything it was about a $7k worth of cash I had to fork out... I ended up decided against it. In both cases it was for a car the same year as mine, and with slightly more mileage (at the time).

While the white pearl color really got me obsessed with, and after I test drove it I fell in love despite the outdated looking interior.... but I just couldn't justify it financially... plus, the G35c is due for a redesign within the next year or so.

In any case, if you are going to do it, get at least an '04. The interior is slighly updated if I remember correctly, and it had a couple of things that the '03 didn't have... I can't remember what it is now. Of course, the '05 updates are even better, but '05's and up are quite noticeably more expensive...

Oh, and make sure you are ready to have to potentially get new rear tires every 15-20k miles due to the camber problems that the coupes been having. Also the bad gas mileage.

I still drool over this pic from the dealer of the car I looked at....

I would probably donate a kidney to have my G35 coupe back. An absolute blast to drive.

I didn't have any issues with mine, really.

I ended up moving to the TSX because 1) As jesal said, my wife didn't understand the whole manual transmission thing, 2) Kid was being planned and 3) I got an absolutely fucking fantastic deal which allowed me to get the TSX as an even trade.

I anticipate looking at the G35 again in a few years when I'm ready to put the TSX out to pasture.

And what's it going to be out of pocket? If it's not close, then I'd probably not do it. Save up and pull the trigger when it makes better financial sense (if there is such a thing when dealing with cars)...

I've never owned a car that was much quicker than the TSX so I don't know what I'm missing. So glad I don't have those memories to look back on. Don't know how you do it.

Dom, any regrets over the switch to MT? There are times i wish i had an AT, but 90% of the time I am so glad and can row the gears and have a little bit of fun when I drive. Stuck on the 401 or 404, well those are the rare exceptions

What is the difference between 03 vs. 05? I have an 03 now and don't mind it...is the 05 that much better?
