Traffic on a hill?

Wow...Anyone ever been in traffic on a big hill? Last night I was in a parking garage and there was a huge line, and for about 10 minutes I was on a really steep hill. The guy behind me was right on my butt, so everytime I took my foot off the brake i was like inches from hitting him. It's pretty crazy!

Anyone else ever been in something like this? Seemed like the car infront of me was gonna slam into me every single time the line moved...I tried to keep my gas on really slow, is there a proper way to drive in traffic like this? I kept holding the brake while hitting the gas...

Oh yeah, been there done that, almost every Friday or Saturday night...

I've always found that if somebody is coming up behind you, and your stopped, I just like to roll back a bit, to show the guy behind me that my car is standard, and there's a chance that I could roll back, usually they get the hint and leave a good amount of space, but other times people don't even notice and get right up your ass.

I used to use the e-brake alot when i was learning how to drive stick. you could have the ebrake up, put just a little bit of gas then release the brake.

Somehow that just sounds like it's bad for the transmission.

Nah it's bad for the brake, has nothing to do with the transmission...

Good advice, except the CL/CL-S has a ebrake like a damn Buick and not hand operated.

I have a nice steep hill at the light before my parent's house, and all the soccer mummys get right on my ass. I have to use the e-brake because they get so unbelievably close. I remember one time, in the big horse van, we rolled back into someone on a steep hill. It was an auto, but with 6 horses, all weighing +1000 lbs and the van, it rolled back a good foot and nailed the moron behind us.

Acura needs something like BMW's start off assistance. It uses the brakes to hold your car on hills for a few seconds until you give it enough gas to move forward.

I leave plenty of room in front of me. And I do the same thing S A Cho does. I roll back a little to let the person behind me know. If they keep riding my butt I roll more. I roll BACK into them, its legally considered their fault for following to close. Same as if they rear ended me. Luckily, never had it happen.

I don't use the ebrake... I just put the clutch in, and put my foot on the regular brake... Since you're in a line there no need to inch forward every time there another inch... just move one car length at a time...

I do roll back at time to let the people behind me know what's up...

<--- drives in stop and go traffic nearly everyday with a 6spd...

Yes, but if its a very steep hill, you're going to roll back more than you want when you take your foot off the brake to move forward, hence the e-brake come in. Unless you have three legs

Nah, you let out the clutch enough so that it holds the car in place when you take your foot off the brake to gas. Works pretty well. Try it on a empty hill sometime. Thats how I was taught to do it.

Typically, neither do I, but on the right hill, with the right idiot, it can be annoying...

Again, we're talking steep here right? Not a hill, but a steep parking garage. If it's steep enough, for example 45 degrees, I cant see an idling engine having enough torque to keep the car in place.

i used to be pretty good about hills in my se-r...but it's been a few years since i've crashed gears day to day. so i'd probably be messed up in the game.

but i did like greenmonster did and i'd give the dude behind me a little roll back to see what i'm dealing with and from then on i've always been good. i only had a problem when i was first learning.

I've driven stick since I was 16 and have never once used the e-brake on a hill and I can't remember the last time I drifted back by accident. I find it amusing when automatics drift back when I don't even drift back w/ a stick.

The best advice for all of you people who are still drifting back: Drive to the middle of a hill with no traffic around. Stop the car, depressing the clutch and the brake. While leaving your foot on your brake, slowly release the clutch. When you see the RPMs drop slghtly, ease off the brake (still slowly releasing the clutch until it holds the car with no brake). Slowly depress the gas pedal and you're on your way (with no drifting back).

note: For those who don't believe this is possible, try driving in Pittsburgh or Western PA where there's nothing but hills, you'll learn real quick.

if in the case that you roll back into the guy behind you, would it be his fault? by technicality in California, a drive should be able to see the front cars bumper.

yes and no.

I'm pretty sure that here in PA you're supposed to be able to see the car's bumper (or rear tires touching the ground), but at the same time an operator "must have full control or his/her vehicle at all times". So even if someone pulls up too close to your car (or pulls in front of you) and you hit them, it is considered your fault. However, since you really aren't going to cause much damage to either car (in most situations) by drifting back a couple feet, I'm pretty sure neither party would bother pressing charges, calling insurance, or even exchanging information.

I haven't been into a traffic in a hill but I might have already slammed into other cars if I were in that situation. My car has a poor braking system, got an unreliable Honda brake rotors. I'll try to replace it soon.

Whatever you guys do, DO NOT USE the clutch to hold the car on a slope for anything more than a few seconds. This is the QUICKEST way to fry your clutch.

If you burn the clutch, then yeah. I've been doing this for years with several different cars I have had. I have never had an issue.
