TL -vs- Benz E500

Hey guys,

I go over today to my buddy's office today and I let him test drive my TL to dinner. He says it has better kick than his E500. After dinner, he wants to see who's faster off the light, and you know what happens next! We go back and p/u his car hit the nearest red light (with no cops around of course) and both floor it on the green. About 5 seconds later, I'm going about 60 down the road and he's about 4-5 car lengths behind me. This was the first "and probably last" time I'll do this. The E500 is a V8 with 300hp, so I'm thinking he really doesn't know how to drive his car except for it's "luxury" options, most of which we have on our car too! I think his car compares to a RL, so is the RL that much better than the TL?

If you mean is the RL faster than the TL because it has 300 hp compared to 270 of the TL, I would say probably not. The RL has all-wheel drive which is great for traction but adds several hundred pounds of weight to the car. The RL weights about five hundred pounds more than the TL and the advantage of 30 extra horse power is negated.

but E500 is much heavier than TL...

I'll say the TL maybe faster at the beginning... but E500 is faster after 60mph or 70mph...

Compare the specs:

TL 0-60: 5.7, 1/4 mile: 14.4
E500: 0-60: 5.9, 1/4 mile 14.4

Should be NECK AND NECK. If you beat him, this indicates you're a much better driver than he is.

cmon, this is a pointless thread....anyone who knows anything about cars should know that a TL should not be able to pull away 4-5 car lengths from a e5hundo......this is just like that kid that posted and said that his friend had a clk430AMG (real AMG).......any enthusiast would know that theres no such thing, or in this case, just not possible.

YOU'RE RIGHT! He's a pretty conservative driver. I just talked to him and he didn't even know what speeds to use his sport shifter to pass cars on the freeway. He does it on auto. I told him to downshift to 3 and floor it. He's now in shock how powerful his car is. Funny huh! He buys a 60K+ car and doesn't even know how to use it.

WEll my thing is, why pay more money for a car when you can get the same features and nearly the same speed from a car that cost half the price. BENZ, your just payin for the name.

You have obviously never sat in, or driven an E500.

Thats like those Hyundai commercials asking why anyone would pay extra for a Civic or Accord when they could get the same features in a Hyundai. In the same way, there are domestic & Korean cars with similar features as a TL for much less.

There is a big difference between cars thats more than just a check box or stat in a review.

I love Acuras, but I'd take an E500 over a TL anyday. The new RL would make me think about it a little bit longer, but I'd probably still go with the E500.

well...if u not know

benz cars are pretty lazy at takeoffs, but in high end they will just walk away after 100mph

E500 is one heavy car and maybe he didn't turn off the TCS

man.... E500 is a heck of car to be compared to a TL.

Seriously, people who have it and can spend it, don't mind paying more for the name brand and the prestige of MB.

By the way...

5.7 secs on a TL is only for a 6sp, not the auto.

In the other hand E500, try these test for comparison
road and track 5.9 14.4
motortrend 5.8
motorweek 5.7 14.1

OFF TOPIC: I hate MB E500's. Goes back to a few months ago when my family and I went to Houston. We took the Accord instead of the TL cause we didn't want to leave the TL overnight at the airport and the Accord is a 96 LX so it isn't a car someone would mess with. I park next to a MB E500 and a Landrover discover because they were nice. Five days later i come back to find my car damaged on the side that the MB was on. WTF were they thinking?

I would hafta say...its all up to the driver...but if it were both good drivers...the Benz will spank the TL.
