TL v.2008 Caddy CTS

Whatever is left with the aging TL (on Accord platfrom which in 2008 may not see addition of SH-AWD), how do you think the new Caddy will fair? Would you give an American car a chance given that our TL built in Ohio and has had less than stellar fit and finish? Or do I not risk it and get the G35 and get an awesome RWD car, but give up the great gas mileage of a Honda? I would like to give Caddy a chance. Thanks Tim

I would pick the new CTS over the TL.

TL is still a bargain, I would have to see how much the new CTS would be priced at to make a choice.

But the good news is that i would totally shop for the CTS now. New one looks great on paper.

CTS if it stays under $40k loaded (over the G35, TL, and IS)

TL and G35 would be tied for second.

2008 G35 Coupe . . .

I hope. Got to have another coupe, but rear wheel drive this time and it doesn't look like it will come from Lexus.

I had a 2001 MDX and 2002 TL-S. Since then, I've had a BMW, MB, and a Volvo. I now have a Cadillac SRX and CTS. The CTS is the 3.6 with the six-speed. Both cars have been flawless and the service from the dealer excellent. I'm most likely trading the SRX this week for an Escalade. Comparing the Cadillacs to the Acuras I'd say they're both built well. Don't laugh, but some of the materials used in the Cadillacs are better than what I found in the Acuras. GM's design choices however are a totally different debate although the newer cars have come a long way. The Lansing plant that builds the SRX and CTS has won numerous awards. Both of my cars were delivered defect and rattle free and have pretty much stayed that way. Definately consider the CTS if it appeals to you. The one thing to consider though is that while Cadillac resale has improved, it's not nearly as good as Acura/Honda. You need to look not only at the purchase price but what your total likely ownership costs will be over the time you plan to keep the car.

My gf's 2.8 CTS has been less than perfect, and it only has 20k easy miles on it. Her Grand Prix had less problems.

I dont like the way the new CTS looks either, front end is just too much. The interior of the current CTS isnt anything to scream about either, def not as nice as the TL. We'll see about the new one.

thanks for your reply. I generally do not see anything inherently wrong with American cars, and your point on resale is well taken. Perhaps the there will be steeper discounts on the Caddy. I know that I get hosed anyway on my trade in of the TL.

As to quality, I heard of some electrical gremlims with the SRX. Otherwise, are your Caddies still tight when it comes to the rattles, and holding up in appearence of finishes?

2008 CTS is VERY nice. it will be interesting to see how it stacks up with the others. if 2009 isn't nice to the TL (considering that's when a redesign should be in effect) the CTS could gain a considerable amount of ground.

Having looked at the old CTS I can say that the TL is a bargain in comparison - especially when you look at how many features and luxury amenities are bundled into the price. With a Cadillac, and even Nissan to a lesser extent, it seems like everything is extra. That said, the new CTS certainly looks to be a more appealing choice than either the G35 or the TL.
