Tires... too soon to toss?

I have about 8k miles on my car. (06' 05AT) when i stop short sometimes i hear the tires screech.. more often now then ever... i know the oem michelins are garbage but 8k is a little too soon don't you think?? safety hazard or do the michelins just tend to be a little loud??

Note that i live in new york so the driving conditions are "extreme"....

Do the penny test to see if there is enough tread left. But I know the stock Michelins are crappy wheather or not you have tread. I suggest get another set of rims and winter tires since you're in NY.

Stick a penny upside down with the head inside the tread, if you can see the lettering above the head, tires are done.

Haven't had any problems with my Michelins. They're not the grippiest (sp?), but they also shouldn't wear out that quickly unless you're an aggressive driver, you've taken them on the track, or something.

If you don't like 'em take 'em off and sell them in the black market here. Tires are going to squeal regardless of the make or model. Harder tires (that last longer) will tend to squeal more... The OEM's are "touring" tires IIRC, so they are made to last long, and aren't considered to be "performance" tires (which grip more, but usually wear alot quicker).

I had 2 OEMs that lasted for 50K miles... so @ 8K miles your tires are still brand new... The other 2 OEM's I had, had issues with the sidewalls (I blew one out on a pot hole, the other on a curb).

I'm frugal, so I'd run 'em until they hit the wear indicators (2mm), but if you don't like the tires, and don't mind spending money replacing almost brand new tires, get your self some performance tires.

All tires will get better grip after some wear... there's a reason why racers "shave" new tires...

Of course the lower the tread the higher the chance you will hydroplane when you hit water at highway speeds. And the lower it is, the less water it takes.

I replaced the Michelins on my TSX at about 28k miles. They were pretty worn and felt unsafe especially on wet roads - my tires kept slipping when starting from a stop. I've never had tires suck so bad at such low mileage....and you'd think with the premium Michelin charges for those tires, they'd be better, but they aren't at all.

Make sure they are inflated correctly also.
