Time to renew registration...compulsory insurance violation?

i'll try and keep this short.

sold a car 2 years ago, signed over title to new owner, drove to tag&title location, cancelled insurance on that vehicle and turned in tags. bought new car 2 days later, got new tags, new insurance, etc.

well after 2 years in maryland, you have to get new registration (month/year) stickers for your license plate. so i go to do that, and the DMV says i have an insurance violation from 2 years ago when i owned my previous car and now they're refusing to give me new stickers until i pay off some enormous balance that i never even knew i had accrued until a few days ago.

i don't get it. i did everything i was supposed to do when i sold my car...not sure how this happened but i'm looking for a way out. any thoughts?

here is some reading material i found...

do you have ANY paperwork from when you went to MVA to turn the tags in with the reg card (per wbsite)? do you have any paperwork (reciept) from the sale of the previous vehicle? Do you have any paperwork for when you cancelled the insurnace coverage?

you need to locate your paper trail and then give that to MVA. it seems that MVA messed up somewhere processing and then you ended up with this large fine (as per the warning on the website).

i'm so bad about keeping receipts and stuff. plus, this was 2 years ago...i'm hoping that the tag/title place has records of it. the sale of the previous car was a cash transaction off of eBay. i called state farm on the phone to cancel my previous insurance.

idk what to do. i guess i'll go talk to them in person and explain what happened.

Whenever I turn in my plates I mail them to the DMV certified, and ask for a confirmation to be mailed back to me. That way I have proof I turned in the plates from the DMV themselves.

If you received anything when you turned in the tags, now is the time to dig it out...

^i don't think i'd be able to find anything, that's why i'm banking on the hope that the tag/title location has records of that.

i've moved twice in the past 2 years, i wouldn't know where to start looking for any paperwork.

well....you better hope they have record of when you turned those tags in. try calling state farm and see if they still have you in their systems. they might have record of your cancellation of your insurance coverage.

sorry for all the trouble you have to go through. it sucks. good luck.

Sorry, lesson here. Might be time to learn what papers are important and how to keep up with them. Hope it works out for you.

i'll need to start keeping a better filing system for important documents in the future.

Hopefully, this works out for you.

As far as filing, it doesn't have to be complicated - it can be, and I guess more organized/complicated can have benefits - but it doesn't have to be complicated.

For the RepMobile, I put everything in a 6x9 manila envelope. On the outside I write the VIN, date, other details. Everything goes in the envelope, registration, driver authorization, Ins card, etc; envelope goes in the glove box. I'll add receipts for service, etc. When I turn it in, remove envelop and put in file drawer. Done.

For personal cars, I start a plain file folder and add relevant documents as needed. That is also in a file drawer (which is not especially well organized). I keep the Ins card, registration, service records, etc. in the OM in the glove box. I'll put all that in the file folder when I relinquish the car.

Like so:

Not pretty, but effective.

This happened to me too.

But I had the bill of sale.

So, if you don't have it them you have to use some Jedi mind trick shit on them.

Take the VIN of the car with you. Tell them to pull the registration on that VIN. It should be close to the date you sold it. Might even have your bill of sale on file. Even if they don't you shouldn't have anything more than a $150 fine for a month of no insurance.

Honestly, this shit is ridiculous in 2012. Maryland sucks.

That said, save any paperwork that clears you of this. It took me five years to finally get them to get rid of the flag on me after I initially proved there was no violation.

You can only imagine how many hours I spent there wasting my time.

bearcat's filing system makes me look ridiculously anal with my paperwork for my current cars. it all started with the TL. i stil lhave the window sticker and the temp tags i had on the TL when i bought it.

my old cars i filed like bearcat. all the reciepts and appropriate paperwork in a file or a envelope in somewhat chronological order.

The MVA in MD's incompetence was exceeded only by their apathy when it happened to me. But a lot of things are computerized now.

Good luck, but you may find a lot of waiting on the phone.

thanks for all the insight everyone. i am going to try my luck this friday at both the Tag/Title location that i went to AND the MVA headquarters.

all i can do is hope for the best. i don't believe i should have to pay ANY type of fine. i didn't do anything wrong. why should i pay $150+ when i followed proper procedure and did everything by the books? i will go in with a cool head and hopefully prevail. i'll update this thread on monday.

wish me luck!

Fair doesn't matter if you don't have the papers to back it up. Just saying.

sold car on eBay. signed over title to new owner. there is no paperwork for cash transactions.

turned in plates at tag/title location...i probably have a receipt but who knows where that is? i feel that the tag/title location should have a record of my plates and what date i was there.

called insurance company over the phone to inform them to cancel the insurance. no paperwork there.

so...idk...the only real papers i could have are from my plates.
