Ticket Advice (no, I'm not trying to get out of it)

I got a speeding ticket yesterday as I was on my way home from Dallas.

It was deserved. ha.

My question for you guys though is this.

My insurance does not spike my premiums for speeding tickets alone. I found this out when I got my first ticket two years ago and called them up. Since my premium will not rise, is there any benefit to taking defensive driving?

Point go away after a year or two correct? As long as I'm not stupid and don't get 20 tickets within the next year, there really isn't any reason for me to pay for defensive driving, right?

Or am I missing something?

Ha welcome to my world. Was it also in Irving? lol. Here's the deal... or at least in my case.. I could pay $240 for the ticket with no defensive driving or pay $117 fee + $25 defensive driving = $142. I chose defensive driving cus it is saving me $100; yes, I will have to spend 6 hours of my time completing it online but I have 90 days to do it and can save and come back to it at anytime. And even if your insurance doesn't go up because of the ticket, you can at least give the certificate of completion to your insurance and they'll prolly give you a little discount off your monthly rate (not much, prolly a few bucks but w/e)

Wow, refreshing seeing someone actually admit guilt on here. Usually it's the other way around. Good luck.

80 going 65 is ok in my opinion.. Still Illegal but so are a lot of things that shouldn't be.. Only time Im against it is if there is heavy congestion and you are still busting 80 swerving through cars..

Everyone drives 80 now and days it seems..

No, I was on I-20 East about 5-10 west of exiting for I-45 South.

Alright, so I re-read my ticket, and I don't know if I'm reading it correctly. I think I will call to verify, but it says on the ticket that if I take defensive driving, they will charge me $110. I thought that was on top of the $225 ticket. No? If it is only $110 dollars I will definitely do defensive driving then. I'm guessing since it was in Dallas, it's probably about the same deal as in Irving. Thanks for the tip!

Lol, well it's not like I was innocent. I was consciously speeding. I hate the threads that people start that rant "I was only going 5 or 10 miles over, but they still ticketed me!!!! Can I get out of it!?!?"

No stupid, you were breaking the law. Deal with it.

I thought it's usually $225 + $110, if you are willing to do the schooling.

Na, you either pay the full ticket price which would be $225 and it be done with, OR you pay a municipal court/processing fee (in this case $110) & the $25 for defensive driving. So you'd be saving $90

Take the class in person. The times I have had to, there were always a few girls worthy of talking to there. Generally ones who received their ticket speeding home after a hard night of dancing for twenties, if you know what I mean.

I've always bought the traffic school certificates. I think it's illegal though.

Alright. I'll do that.
I'll call them up to make sure about the fee for defensive driving though, because no where on the ticket does it say there is an extra $25 for DD. Just the $110 for court costs and the program.

The cop misspelled my last name on the ticket does that mean I can get out of it?

I'm already working on that
Trying to decide which is the best one to get.
I'm thinking about going wireless. I can't stand cords and whatnot hanging all over the place.

I know some people have hardwired them into the car, but it seems like a pain in the arse.

I hear valentine one is the best. I'm going to buy one in a couple weeks and see if its any good. It has a 30 day trial, so that's a perk. Check out some of the videos of it on youtube, pretty cool stuff.

The problem with all these detectors is, you have to update them.. and that costs alot.

Not sure what makes the Valentine better or the Passport worse, but I know the Passport has never let me down, and I live in the radar traffic enforcement capital of the world (except London)...

My car is silver but the cop has it listed as gray.. Do you think the ticket will hold up in court?

Meh...
It's an easily 'interchangeable' color if you were to ask me.
Now if the guy put black, hell yea you could get out of it. Possibly even if it was put as dark gray or something, but I don't know if they use specifics like that.

I would say 'no' though.

The cop wrote 7:43pm on the ticket but it was really 8:38pm. Think the judge will dismiss it?

UPDATE:

I had sent in my payment for the defensive driving along with the other fees that may have been associated with said conviction back in september when I recieved the ticket.

About a week or two passed and I hadn't recieved anything in the mail. I called the office to make sure that they had recieved my info (to make sure I didn't have a warrant out for my arrest for not paying a speeding ticket ), and they confirmed that they had recieved it, just not processed it yet.

Another week or so had passed and I called again, just to make sure the lady I spoke to before wasn't on crack. They again confirmed it, and the lady even said she'd get the other associate to begin processing it right away. I thought, "Alright, whatever. They have it, I just gotta wait."

I got that ticket in September. It's now been four months since I received that ticket and I have not heard boo from them by phone or by mail (the method which the ticket said I would be contacted) which I should've. The catch is, I still haven't been charged for the ticket/defensive driving.

Should I call again for the third time....four months later and inquire about it?

I guess the question is, should I just ignore it and maybe hope I never get charged for it, but still have ticket on my record (I'm guessing it's on there even though I haven't been charged), or try to finally get the info, have them charge me (as they technically should) and follow through with defensive driving and have the ticket taken off my record? Mind you that has been my second ticket. I got my 1st in Dec. '06, and then this one in Sept '08.

Suggestions; advice?

I would call them and get it cleared from your record. You don't want any warrants out for your arrest for unpaid tickets.

Was the payment a check? If so, has it cleared? If it cleared you paid.

No. It was a CC. And I always watch my statement throughout the month closely, and I know it hasn't been charged. I've even gone back and looked to make sure.

I got a ticket within the first few months of getting my TL (April 2006), 79 in a 65. It never showed on my insurance, I was able to pay the ticket online, I wasn't about to drive four hours to try and get out of it.

Call them. Make sure they get everything processed correctly. If they have a record of your Sept '08 ticket in the system, they will track you down.

On the other hand, my wife got a ticket and it never got put into the system. We kept checking online, calling in and she even went to her notice to appear date but they never had a record of it. I haven't checked in a while, but it was more than a year after the ticket that I checked last. Hopefully there is a statute of limitations.

Also, it sounds like TC has it much better than CA. Here you have to pay for the ticket AND pay for traffic school. I even had to pay extra for the priveledge of being allowed to take traffic school.

Good luck.

Cop spelled my name correctly, but it was input into the system wrong. I called them to fix it so it would match my traffic school certificate.

Figures.
I tried calling at 4:50....I look on their website, and they close at 4:30. That's govt for you.

Don't you think if something was had gone awry in trying to process my ticket, they would've at least tried to contact me my phone or mail? I'm gonna call them again when they open up tomorrow. Maybe I'll get lucky and they just never got it in the system which = no ticket or payment. lol
