Thoughts on the Volvo XC90? Liked it and bought one.
Drove one yesterday (T6 Momentum) and was pretty impressed. Having now driven the MDX, X5 and Q7, the XC90 is front of the pack for me. Was all ready to pull the trigger on a new MDX, was going between gas and a Hybrid, but the XC90 seems to be a level above the MDX and future for feature is much less expensive than a Q7. I can't bring myself to spend that kind of money. X5, it's nice but the cargo space is lacking and we do a few trips where we need a bit more than what the X5 offers.
Anyway, curious what others think about the car. Trying to read up on reliability, known issues. I was hesitant on a 2L, turbo and supercharged motor, but it seemed to handle itself well, much quieter than I expected, even though you could tell that was much less displacement sitting under the hood.
Both the MDX and XC90 have their infotainment shortcomings, but the MDX looks tired and old compared to the XC90 and if I'm going to be in a car for the next 6-8 years, by 2020 I see the current MDX being behind everyone.
Cheers, all, look forward to hearing some thoughts.

I've been meaning to test drive one of these. It is one of the classiest looking SUVs on the market IMO. I sat in an R Design version at the auto show last year and was also impressed with the interior. My wife also likes it, so it's at the top of our short list to eventually replace the JGC.

Such a great looking car Are you looking to lease or purchase? I haven't heard anything regarding reliability with the new generation.
If you've considered a MDX, what are your thoughts on the RX? The 3-row RX350L just launched and has been selling well.

RX is sooooo boring to drive. So boring that I forgot to add it to the list, drove it and forgot all about it. The L is OK, but it's still smaller than the MDX for cargo. I dismissed it right away.

I thought the T6 was turbocharged; the T8 is turbo and supercharged. So if you drove the T6 it would have only been turbocharged.
Ironically my wife and I are in the market for a new SUV since her car needs to be replaced and we need the space/utility of an SUV. We are also looking at the XC60 or XC90. I was reading a few comparisons between the two and the 60 won on performance (same engine in the two .. either T5 or T6.. and lighter weight so pretty obvious), price, driving performance, and overall. But the 90 won on space and comfort and bells and whistles. Plus they are Volvos... safest cars on the block.
We actually were lucky enough to rent a T6 XC60 on our trip to Colorado last month and it was great. It was comfy, smooth (drove more like a car than an SUV) and had ample power and good steering. Really the only thing I hate about the XC60 is the center dash console. Why the eff is there a phone keypad??? The XC90's is much nicer/upscale.
We want to re-test drive the XC60 as well as the XC90 soon.
One thing is for sure though when we test drive them.. I will only drive a T6 (or even a T8 if they have one but I've only seen one or two.. they seem to be pretty rare.) The T5 would not be powerful enough for me. I also love the R-Design. If I could get one of those it would be icing on the cake.
But we also want o test drive a few others such as the F-Pace, 2019 QX50, 2019 RDX/MDX, GLC, and Explorer. I was thinking about the Toureg but just don't know about that one.
Oh yea, I just think the new Lexus SUVs are hideous... that front end...

I used to love the Lexus design language... but I've grown very tired of it, very quickly. It's just way too much to look. Nice interiors, but exteriors.
I however really really like the new Volvos. They look super classy and elegant. And what I like even more is you don't see them at every intersection, like you do X5s. That by no means would be a deal breaker, but more so an inherent upside to owning a Volvo. Personally, I wouldn't be overly concerned about performance with such a big ute, so long as it isn't boring and completely anemic to drive.
Isn't the Q7 getting a bit old, also now?

I picked up a new XC60 T6 a couple of months ago. The lease on my 2015 XC60 T6 was almost done. The new XC60 is completely different. The handling, suspension, and transmission are much better. It drives smoother and quieter on the highway. It reminds me of the last Q5 I drove. Not as sporty as the Q5, but definitely more car-like in terms of handling. I liked the phone keypad in my old XC60.
With respect to the XC90, I wouldn't be too concerned about the new touchscreen/infotainment system. The center display in my XC60 takes about 10 to 20 seconds to fully boot up. I haven't experienced any issues with lag after it is booted up. The system could definitely be improved, but it works fine and is very intuitive.
Volvo makes some of the best seats. They are so comfortable.
I like the MDX and the XC90. I don't need a vehicle that large, but I think both are good choices.

OP, I don't think enough time has passed for people to vet the long term reliability but it doesn't seem that there are huge problems upfront with that motor. I would be cautious but I do love the new Volvos.

I looked at the XC90 last year around this time or sometime in April, I love the way the front, especially how the grille looks. It drove nice, power delivery felt ok and the interior was very nice and we liked it a lot. Don't think you could go wrong with it..
Double check, but when i was looking last year I believe there may have been some issues with the infotainment system, one of them being that it was very "laggy" and the voice command would sometimes go out but I'm pretty sure an update corrected this. If you haven't already done so, research the Volvo forums, but I think most of the bugs have been worked out...
Good Luck..

The main thing I don't like about the Volvo is that all the controls are in that screen.
I can't believe the MDX is still using the old gen infotainment. The Odyssey is ahead of the MDX in infotainment which is crazy.
If you haven't already, on Youtube checkout the savagegeese review of the XC90.

I think the XC90 is one of the best looking SUV on the market right now. Know nothing about the reliability but if I was in the market for an SUV in that price range it would be at or near the top of the list for sure.
