Test drove S-Type R, review & pics - one word WOW !

* 4.2 V8, 400hp, 408lb/ft supercharged, OMG... It feels so good.

This baby feels very SOLIDLY built, & I've been in NSX, Esprit, Lexus, Acuras, BMWs...

- I hit 100mph+ on the on-ramp entering the tollway... speed built up so smooth & quick, that I didn't know I was going this fast...

- J-Gate 6speed auto trans was so smooth even on WOT...

- Cornering was awesome for a 3960lbs sedan. 245fronts & 275 rears on 18s.

- Braking was great due to the Brembos

I am in love, after the drive, my CL & MR2 felt sedated

Pics in my album

Not yet, waiting for a Silver coming in about a couple of weeks...
But still not 100% sure due to still researching on quality/reliability issues.

If I do pick up one, my CL is up for sale, TL kit & all

Hey, nice commentary... I own a 2001 S-Type 4.0 in addition to my Type S. I can only imagine how fast the 400HP once will be, and I hear the tranny is GREAT!!! (new 6-speed auto)... As far as reliability, Jaguar is pretty good now, but like little things still go wrong (just like with BMW, Mercedes, etc...) I too have driven ferraris, lotus, nsx, etc...

Cheers! ;

I think the word you were looking for was "shit"......after the drive, your CL & MR2 felt like shit.

Thats perfectly fine to say after driving a 400hp $67k luxury rocket.

Technique,
When U say little things still go wrong, can U elaborate on this please...

How many miles do U have on your S-Type 4.0 & what little things went wrong...

I don't want to dump 62K+ down & be frustrated later ... Thx.

Well, there was a rattle in the center vent.
There was a coolant leak cause one of the hose clamps was defective.
The air conditioning compressor was making a loud ticking sound so they replaced it.

Ummm, I have about 25,000 miles on it... and I think that's about all that went wrong with it... Like I said, it's similar to a BMW or Mercedes...

You won't be disappointed... I can tell you this... I have owned many cars, and this S-Type turns ALMOST as many heads as an esprit or viper. It's REALLY quite amazing!! Here's a picture of mine, it's a leased vehicle (I just drive it when I'm on the east coast) but I still take pretty good care of it...

My Dad has had a long history of Jaguars, and right now is so happy with them. He currently has a 2000 XJR and just got rid of a 98 XJ8 and a 98 XK8 beginning of this year. He had no problems whatsoever with any Jaguar since 1995 except for one small problem where the clock in the front dash fused out. The S-type is a great car and has very very few problems, I think the only thing that beat it out was the LS430 Lexus. I would get it if I were you and good luck with it. That thing is so awesome looking and if it moves anything like the XJR which I've heard it does than that is awesome. BTW that is a damn nice house for $300K, Shit in Westchester County for $300K, well you can't get anything. Maybe half an acre of land.

Uhhhh, not really... The M5 will handle better, probably, but that's about it... Don't know how the E55 will compare... The S-type looks the best though... M5 is outdated as hell...

How are the E55 and M5 dated?? The M5 is the best sports sedan availiable in the US. When the RS6 comes, then I will have to say otherwise.

The styling of the E55 and M5 is old YES, but both old farts still outperform the S-Type R. Also, when you buy those 2 cars above you get exclusivity. A S-Type shares a lot of the basic hardware with a Lincoln LS. Jag has come a long way, but they are becoming more and more a Ford. There was a good article in Automotive News about this last week.

The interior and exterior of the Benz looks dated, the interior of the M5 doesn't so much look dated.....the exterior styling is just blah already (since 97, there have been 528s, 530s, 540s, all with available sport packages). People have been hooking them up for years now as well. The styling is just played on the 5series IMO.

The XJ series Jags for example have been out for awhile and still look amazing.....because they don't make a ton of them, people don't pimp them out to death, and they have a high entry price.

I think that the XJ is much more dated than the E39 5 series. It basical design has been around for many years. Both cars are due for redesigns within a year or two.

The XJ is due for a redesign next year and guess what its going to basically look like.....the current car. Will be a bit more rounded off, higher roofline (for taller folks, won't be as sleek as the current car), new platform, newer toys.

The overall shape of the XJ will never change.

well, we own a 1999 Jag VDP.. i know its not a type S-R.. and its no where close to the power output.. but from my understanding and experience of driving the VDP.. i must say Jag has superb handling and power output even though mine has only 290 horses. and the reliability issue.. well.. so far.. no problem whatsoever, except the roof stuck for once! i gotta say, Jag is still the car to go if you want comfort and british elegance..

PS. i cant imagine how the 400hp S-Type would perform..

how much are those S type - Rs going for??
