Test drove a Cayenne GTS today.

Well I went to the Porsche dealer today with the wife and test drove the gts. I am looking for a replacement for the ML. All I can say is wow. This thing sounds like a muscle car. It was pretty loaded with the alacantra inserts on the seats, headliner and parts of the dash. It had the optional 21 inch rims and it was incredible. The handling for an suv was absolutely insane and the brakes when you stand on them will make you want to puke. I am totally impressed with this suv. With the suspension on the lowest setting you feel like you are driving something half of it size.

The salesman told me to wait for the 09 refresh so I cant imagine how much better that will be.

Was this one a tiptronic or manual?

I think it's Tiptronic... not many SUVs in manual nowadays especially with 7-8 speed manual transimissions.

I assume this was at Langen, all of the sales people at that particular langen dealership are pretty cool, did you talk to Justin by any chance?. One of my friends has a Cayenne S, he absolutely loves it, his wife has a ML500(maybe a 550, I can't keep track of the benz numbers) and while the benz is faster, the Porsche, he feels a is a far superior drivers car.

I looked at them a few weeks ago, and I like everything about the GTS except the seats, I have this strong dislike of Alcantara and you can't get a GTS without it. IRRC the cayenne was redesigned for 08 and the GTS came out late in the model year, so they probably ironed out all the "problems" for 09. I know the 997.2(or whatever they are calling it) is due out in 09 and 911 fans are going apeshit. PDK tranny available on the non-turbo models, they can't handle the torque of the turbo's at this point. Not to mention the tiptronic on the turbo is awesome, much better then the regular 997 tiptronic.

That's easy to fix. Just find the Cayenne forums and offer a trade for some leather seats. You'll get a bite real quick, I'm sure.

As for that exhaust,

First person I've heard who didn't like Alcantara

Somewhat hard to maintain, sure.... but keeps your butt in place in the twisties, shows less wear, and has a nicer feel to the touch.

I really like the Cayenne GTS.... but whats up with that ghetto tack welded square piece of metal between the tips? Its a preproduction model... right?

man, they are a suite car. going to a porsche dealer and having them tell you to wait is much different than going to a ford dealer and them telling you to wait

I know I'm not alone in my dislike for alcantara. I won't even seriously consider a vehicle that uses it.

As for the "benefits" I think its very case dependent, as for keeping your butt in place, if you have a seat that fits its a non-issue(I've never once slid or moved in the S2k), the center of a seat is the part that typically shows the least wear, the ingress and egress wear spots are still made of leather. As for having a nicer feel to the touch, that is completely subjective I hope this is a fad that passes quickly.

Presume you mean apeshit in a good way. I've never been a p-car fanatic, but admit the revised 911 has caught my attention.

If you are a driving enthusiast, this is the golden age. I'm afraid future regulation and big brotherish nannyism will spoil the fun.

I haven't had a chance to try out the GTS yet. Just like Phil, you have to try it out to be impressed, I remember he wasn't too hot on it. I sat in it and absolutely love the whole alcantara theme, the GTS definitely looks better than the Turbo aesthetically. The problem is the speed of the Turbo is addicting. Test drive one and you'll see what I mean. It's a little less connected to the road but a damn rocket. Instead of picking up a new GTS I'd give a try to a used Turbo or a Turbo S. I'm among the really few car enthusiasts who've always praised the Cayenne since it came out.

I thought it was going to be the 998 (they are going to run out of 9xx soon, and have to go back around and start over from 901 again).

The reason people are going apeshit is partly due to the fact that the new 911's are starting to look more and more like the old 911's. Thank god that whole 996 era is over The 998 is looking alot like the old 993

The 09's are known as 997 gen 2, it is deemed a facelift. Increased power and efficiency on all models, deletion of tiptronic S on non-turbo cars being replaced with their PDK system as the optional tranny. The 09 Carrera with PDK tranny should be as fast, if not faster then the outgoing Carrera S, it has 10 less ponies and more usable torque, higher compression ratio, greener, etc... Buying a 08 non-turbo right now is a bonehead move with the new car specs having been released. Still not sure how I feel about the PDK, but they still have a standard 6 speed.

My assumption was correct

08 Carrera 0-60 4.8
09 Carrera(with PDK) 0-60 4.3
08 Carrera S 0-60 4.6
09 Carrera S(with PDK) 0-60 4.1

Just for reference
08 Turbo 0-60 3.7

Between more usable power and a well engineered tranny it seems Porsche has out done themselves, the Carrera S is on the heels of the 911. Granted 0-60 is not the best way to measure a car, not many 911 owners are concerned with running light to light, but it is a good bench mark to give an indication of what is possible.

To keep this thread on topic

08 Cayenne GTS 0-60 5.7(roughly what my S2k will do with out a 5k RPM clutch dump - pretty impressive!)

GTS comes with a 6MT unless ordered as a tip.

The difference for 09 will have nothing to do with performance, it's about a new nav system and bluetooth.

Is that 09 number with launch control? Porsche has been telling us that a 09 Carrera S with PDK and launch control will out accelerate the current 911 turbo.

I posted a few months ago about my test drive of the new GTS. I had NEVER even considered a Cayenne as I thought they were fugly (and expensive). The GTS blew me away for an SUV. The power was OK, but nothing spectacular. The handling on the other hand was awesome. The salesman scared the crap out of my on an on-ramp.

I ended up doing some shopping around and ended up finding a nicely TechArt-modded '05 Turbo. It was almost $15k less than the GTS and, obviously, more powerful...especially after I chip it. Handling is not quite as good but who really wants to autocross an SUV anyway?

I was told that was with launch control, however the source is unconfirmed but normally reliable. If it is even faster with launch control that is astonishing!

Do you know if the 09 Cayenne's are getting direct injection? I don't follow them that close and haven't heard any word of it.

My boss went to Spain last month to drive the new 997 and he was blown away by the PDK and launch control, I get my chance next month in PA. I'll report back with my thoughts then.

The Cayenne is where Porsche debuted the direct injection, it's been there for a while. The 911 is just being brought up to speed with that technology and the Boxster and Cayman are next. The real changes to the Cayenne are in relation to the PCM 3.0 replacing PCM 2.1 and the addition of the Cayenne Turbo S which ups the power game to around 550 for both torque and HP.
