Rumormill: Adam Carolla to host Top Gear USA?
Rumormill: Adam Carolla to host Top Gear USA?
Recent news about NBC's quest to create a Top Gear for the United States has brought forth rumors of potential hosts. First, names like Jay Leno and Jerry Seinfield were offered up to great debate. Now another name with an extensive hosting resume but no previous ties to the peacock network is heading up the leader board. That name is Adam Carolla, formerly of Loveline and The Man Show. Carolla is no stranger to the land of automotive enthusiasm, either. He owns a BRE replica Datsun 510 that once graced the cover of Grassroots Motorsports. The rest of the horses in his stable aren't too shabby either, like an E30 BMW M3, for instance. No official word has come out of NBC on the matter, but an excited Carolla decided to spill the beans on his radio show, anyway.

Jay Leno would be the best choice IMO...and it's already NBC so... I know he doesn't need the money, but it's his passion

Plus, it's not like Leno is unemployed... He's already got a show... but he'd be the best choice.
Seinfield is passionate about porsches, but I don't know if his automotive experience is as wide as Lenos...
Carolla is a car guy, but I've not heard of any other cars of his other than the 510.

re:what Crazy Sellout said
but he already kinda does something like it on his site anyway... well, the one time I watched his review on the R8... I felt like I was watching a car show. The only thing I can see Jay holding off on doing a show like that is he's always trying not to make enemies... And if he had to do this Top Gear show, he'd have to be pretty honest and perhaps dis a lot of American cars... and perhaps losing some fans that see him as such an "American icon".

Leno leaves the tonight show soon (either end of this year or next).
Very few people in the world have as much experience as Leno
Carolla is a big car guy, he knows a lot about them (He does morning radio out here, and often does a few segments about cars).

And Leno has been rumored as well.

they have different humors but it'd be great if they co-host

I see no need for it to be hosted by someone already famous. I mean, who knew who the guys from Top Gear and Fifth Gear were before you first saw the show?

Leno and Carolla mix well together (and they've actually developed a real good friendship lately)

I used to listen to Corolla's talk show in the morning until they dropped it from the Phoenix station for some reason. It was hilarious. He is definitely knowledgeable on cars and is a smart/interesting guy overall. I think he'd make a great host for it.

I'm not talking about Top Gear USA, but the guys that are on the REAL Top Gear were famous before the show.
Richard Hammon was basically their "Ryan Seacrest" from what I understand. He use to have his own hour show "Richard Hammonds 5'Oclock Show" which basically was like a Regis and Kelly before joining the Top Gear team.
Clarkson had a good journalist career before TG, and has been with TG in it's original format since 1988....then joined back on when they started the new format (which we know now) in 2003
James May has been an editor for motoring magazines since the 80's. He only lasted a year on TG until 99...then didn't rejoin till 2006
We didn't know any of these faces till TG came to the states...........they probably have no clue who Jay Leno or Adam Carolla are.

for some reason I was thinking that Top Gear was already wildly popular here in the states.
then I realized that it's really only wildly popular with geeks like us on forums like this.
if that makes any sense.

Well, i've been watching it for years, but keep in mind, in the format it's in right now it's still fairly new (5 years).
It is the most popular "brand" in the world....and it's gets worldwide views....but talk to the general public here and they have no clue what it is.
