Stupid beater failed emissons test (hydrocarbons are too high!)

What makes the hydrocarbons too high....bad cat or 02 sensor. The limit was .80 and I was at 1.87....everything else passed. Any Ideas guys......I don't wanna spend a dime on this car!

How long was the car running before you took it to the inspection station.

Sometimes just letting the car run for awhile before you get there will allow your cat to warm up and you'll pass.

Yep, I used to drive my beater for awhile on the highway before taking them in for inspection. If that didn't do it I'd sometimes have to resort to giving them a tune up

Go to an auto parts store and buy the bottle of stuff that gets you through an emissions test.

Here's one I found.

If your unburned hydrocarbons (uHCs) are that much higher than the limit, the first thing I'd look for is something that's making you misfire. Check:

Spark plug gaps/plug wires
Distributor
Spark timing if those two aren't it. Too early/too late spark is just as bad.

If those are ok, go for the O2 sensor, but I don't see why the cat would be handling the CO and not the uHCs (they're handled in the same stage of the catalyst)...

Anyone actually pass a car, that would've otherwise failed, using this stuff, (or similiar products)? Just curious...

I would say screw it get a Post office box in another state registar it in that state of emmission check.

In Ohio for example they have "e-check"(short of emission check) but it's only in large cities(like Columbus,Cleveland, Dayton, etc) they are thinking about even doing away with it. but where I live as long as you don't get caught you can run without a cat on your car.(my 89 CRX si i run without a cat.)
