Several countries in Europe even have large fees just to get your license. If I remember correctly, Germany is somewhere near $2,500 and they get some really good driver training as well. It's actually something I'd like to see put in place here. Driving is a privilege, not a right. Start charging some coin for a license and see how many people start taking it really seriously...

Yeah, because sarcasm translates so well over the internet. Oh wait, did you catch that sarcasm???

Very nice looking M5! I hate to say it though, the Navigator to me is one of the uglier SUV's available, the back end looks extremely droopy, like a sagging old person.

I love the E39 M5. Can't wait to see pictures of the coilovers and supercharger you're going to put on it.

Agreed! I love the interior on this car. I can't stand the "double-bubble" dash on the newer iDrive cars. Even my wife, who's not a car person at all, says the older BMWs are nicer than the new ones.

OP: Very Nice M5!

Yup, they got it right over there. Having your license is a serious thing, and IIRC there's even a separate certification for being able to drive an automatic transmission and an automatic transmission. I don't remember exactly what it entails, but the driving portion is very strict.

but since this is 'Murrica, we gotta make it easy so that everyone has a chance to get on the road.... I wouldn't mind paying $2,000+ to take my license test, even if it were strict, as long I knew that everyone else had to do the same. Probably wouldn't have liked it at age 16, but I sure as hell would appreciate it now

Hell, sign me up. $2,000 for a license is peanuts if you account for the amt of savings youd get from lower insurance rates in most/many EU countries.

Politically, charging $2,000 for a license would never work in the US; such a fee would be called a regressive tax and an undue burden on the poor. It's more likely that the "rich" would be charged $2,000 while lower income individuals would continue to pay a much lower fee.

E39 ftmfw but you should be embarrassed posting pics. That car is a work of art that looks like it's been tagged by some hoodies.

CLEAN IT

One word: Meisterschaft. Please, please do it.

Oh, and if the interior is "not possible," could it be Individual? I was talking to a fellow Bimmer fan this weekend, and he disagreed, but I told him I would be tempted to buy just about any BMW Individual car.

Very nice!! Congrats!!

I have always loved the E39 M5's, that body style is so sweet! One day I'll have an M5 of my own, an E28 M5 that is. Enjoy!

If you could not tell that my statement about "7 cup holders" was an exaggeration/sarcarsm... then I don't know what to say. Next time I'll use the obsolete "red text" indicator to make sure everyone gets it...

Sad but true, however, that number was just taken from what one country charges. Any significant fee, even if adjusted for the "classes", would be a good start. But, as I'm sure we all know... it will likely never happen in the US.
