So I bought a new vehicle.....

After spending $4K on a 1996 Honda Accord almost 3 years ago.....then adding up repair receipts, I realized that I paid almost $4K to keep the thing running. Misc stuff like lower control arms, balance input shaft seal, tires, brakes (calipers and rotors), radiator, master cylinder, battery, alternator, EGR valve, front wheel bearing kept needing to be fixed. Breaking that down...it was like a $114 monthly payment. So I sold the Accord for $4K 35 months later and decided I'm buy the truck I've always wanted since 2004.....a F-150 FX4 4x4. I know it gets 15-18 MPG, but that doesn't bother me. I put 33K miles on the Accord in 35 months, my commute to work is 6.8 miles each way....so it will cost me an extra $35-40 in gas per month, not that bad.

SO, I find what "appears" to be a perfect white truck....but it is in Brookston Indiana and I'm in the northwest burbs of Chi. The manager of the dealer assured me it was MINT. My limit was $18,000....put $9K down and finance $9K. It was in my range, so the woman and I take a little 130 mile road trip. When I get there, I notice a cuple of decent sized scrapes on the bumper. Then I take for a test drive and the passenger window doesn't rool down. I go to put it in 4 wheel low, and it would kick in. Then I look for dents and scratches and notice a ripple the size of my hand under the tail light. It was a bust....a 260 mile bust!

I stopped by the dealer where I bought my Cobra from and see what they have on their lot. Then I saw my new toy! A MINT (to my standards) 2006 F-150 FX4 with 25000 miles on it. My brother went to school with the sales manager (the same guy that sold me the Cobra) se he gave me the keys to take it out. I Loved it....I looked it over for about 45 minutes....they put it on a lift for me to check everything out. They are fixing one scuff on the bumper for me (the ONLY thing I found). Se we get to talking....I get the truck for $18600 with an extended warranty until 2012 with $9500 down for $206 per month. I pick it up Monday night....

Nice truck, I have thought many times about getting rid of the TL and getting an FX4 for a DD. The TL is great but the TL and my 335 are the same exact color combo and are almost too similar.

not a bad truck. i'm saving for a Lincoln Navigator L 4x4 as we speak. I like the navigator better than the LTZ Suburban . plus i can get employee pricing on any of the big 3 plus Honda or Acura cause i work for Honda. my brother in law does the insurance plans for the big 3 so he hooks me up with the big 3 employee pricing.

You're gonna tell me with all the discounts on these pickup trucks these days you couldn't get a new one for that price?

Nicky, if it isn't too late I would negotiate a better price for that truck. I just checked the wholesale trade-in value for an '06 F150 FX4 Supercab with 25k miles, it's over $5k less than what you're paying for it. Wholesale is about $13k...Sorry to rain in on your party, but you HAVE TO negotiate a better price if you can. Just looking out for you!

Vehicle

2006 FORD F150 FX4 4WD SUPER CAB

Base Price: @ 34000 miles

There is NO WAY you can get an 06 F-150 FX4 for that price! Believe me I've look EVERYWHERE! ....autofocus, autotrader, cars.com, ebay motors....everywhere. I was about to fly to Florida to look at a silver 04 with 30K miles for $17K. These trucks sticker in the mid to upper 30Ks new, you can walk away with one for about $31-31K loaded. That would make for a $425 a month payment.....which is about $200 more then I want to spend.

In the last 3-4 months any large SUV/pickup took anywhere from a 15%-25% hit in resale value....

I offered someone for a 2004 Sequoia Limited, nicely equipped with 40k miles for $11k, and he didn't flinch...The market is shot right now...

with the current market, it's the worst time for trucks right now.

hell, even honda is selling their car under the invoice.

if you haven't signed the paper yet, you should definately try re-negotiating.

good luck!

Out here in the West, it isn't that easy to find a good deal on a truck or SUV...yet. People are still too image conscious for gas prices to really bother them. I gather that once gas hits $5/gal out here, that might change.

I know OP is in Chicago, but I imagine he did his homework first.

Oh I did!
Every truck I looked at was either $20-25K, or if it was under $20K, it was actually used as a work truck. Of course trucks and SUV will have better resale in a place like Chicago.....can you say winter!!! Either way, I'm happy with what I bought....its a good price....it has a warranty until October 13, 2012.....I probably won't have it that long anyways. At $200 per month, I'm gonna make double and triple payments when I can to pay it off ASAP.

Shoofin is right, I know people walking off the lot with new ones for about 2k above that. I'm looking at trucks right now too, you should be able to get in at 15k no problem

A STX or XLT sure....not an FX4.

I was just coming in to post that. Every day they're showing commercials down here (Charlotte, NC) for trucks. They're selling them for half off MSRP.. sometimes more. They just showed a commercial for Dale Jarrett Ford for a 2008 F150 (not sure if was the "FX4") which has an MSRP of ~$25k for $13,995.

Chevy, Ford, and Toyota have been giving these things away. Haven't seen much for Nissan yet...

But I don't know much about the FX4 market... so sounds like a good deal to me if that's the model you want. Congrats

I just took a peak at the dealer auctions around the country. In the Chicago region:

Auction---Avg. Price---Avg. Mileage--No. Sold---Min. Price--Max. Price
CHICAGO-$15,850--------31,108-----------8-------$13,200----$17,600
For argument sake, the auction in my area:
MANHEIM-$16,300--------26,424-----------5-------$15,000----$17,600

I'm a little more comfortable agreeing to your price now. Seems somewhat reasonable, especially with consideration that they are giving you a warranty with it.

this is my opinion on the poster's price paid the dealership for his truck.
I think it's a little high. about 3-5 k about high but that's me.
he could have worked his dealer down.
I can get a brand new FX4 Ext cab 5.4 liter v-8 outfited like his for about 21 grand without tax. cause i have hookups with a guy who has worked at Ford for 30 years and his employee plan incentives is "maxed out"
he got a brand new Ford Powerstroke,4x4,FX4,F-350,double cab, lariet(which is one step under the King Ranch), about every option you can put on a F-350 Lariet. he got that with tax for 30 grand. it stickered at 43 grand.

Also a stripped 2008 FX4 supercab stickers at almost 33k. Invoices at almost 30k. Employee price is 9k behind invoice?? I find that hard to swallow.

Ford does their employee pricing based on how many years the worker has been at the company.
the deal they have going on now is for a "new hire." still a decent deal. but someone like Roy who has been there 30+ years they can't touch his prices.

I know the dealer made money on me. But I also know that I got a good deal because I have been looking for one for about 3 months now. Auction prices are always gonna be lower. I know that the truck I'm buying is a lease returned vehicle...and the only options it doesn't have is a moonroof or leather. I could get a new one for $30K-ish out the door because of $4k Cash back and $3K Ford loyalty, but I didn't want to spend more the $18K because I had $9k to put down....If I can start at half I'm happy. And, I did get 4.9 APR on a used vehicle which is awesome.

if you tried to negotiate on that exact car, you could pretty much kiss it goodbye and have to start the search all over again. which is probably the last thing on your mind considering youve shopped around, and travelled 260 miles just to look at ONE car.

if youre satisfied with your price when compared to what youve seen out there, then let it be. enjoy the truck!
