So which car would you buy?

The 06 S2k is already a year old, once the 07 comes out by model year standards.
That $4k will go toward the immediate depreciation the 06 took by being a year old car.
Next, what is changing with the 07 S2k that demands it to be an MSRP car?
I'm sure if you shopped around you'll be able to get an 07 S2k discounted.
Porsche 993 is nice......hope you have enough $ for maintenance.

Mike, the 993 would be nice, and with it being OBDI, you avoid the CEL/SAI issues of the later 993's... The SAI's might clog, but won't throw a CEL, so from an emmisions standpoint you'd would be ok... but you knew that already.
The 993 is probably about $35K or so, and while it has a little more low end torque, there's something to be said for the S2000 which is cheaper and comes with a new car warranty...
If this is for a weekend fun car, and you don't mind the higher maintenance costs of the 993, then it's probably a toss up...
The 993 is probably at the end of it's depreciation curve, but the s2k would be just starting it's biggest depreciation per year as soon as you drive it off the lot.
I've got both cars set up in my saved autotrader searches, so I've been watching the prices on the used market for both. Buying a used S2k might be the best compromise. Honda reliabilty with the depreciation hit taken by the previous owners...
Oh, BTW, I've seen you post on rennlist

This one keeps popping up in my searches... High mileage, but it was a 27, now at 25... how low can it go... the pss9's are nice.

Like I said, I have really been looking seriously. I like to "window shop" and get a feeling for what cars are going for in my area. Lots of low mileage S2k's forsale in my area right now. Like this one: http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?car_id=200421939
Couple more for under 20K with 45-50K miles on 'em...
Generally fall/winter is a good time to buy convertables/sportscars up here in the northeast.

But if you buy a high mileage example, that would be less of an issue...
I voted for the 06 S2K....

Porsche reliability > Honda reliability. Sounds weird but true from most tests i've seen. The 993 was probably the most reliable sports car in history and if you beat the crap out of both cars, the Porsche would hold up much better. With that said, the maintenance is a BITCH. Buying the Porsche would only be a drop in the bucket compared to the maintenance costs. And if ANYTHING goes wrong, there is no such thing as a cheap Porsche mechanic.

I'm a fan of the 911, but I do realize that they aren't without issues... Most of the things mentioned above require engine removal and some a top end rebuild... definitely not cheap...
There's a reason why the 993 DIY website gets bigger and bigger

Most of these things don't crop up till after 50-60K miles, but porsches aren't without issues... Initial quality might be excellent, but over the long haul, it's another story...

I think the 993 was the best looking of the 911s.
