Should I take a free beater?

A co-worker is trying to give away his 87 Cutlass, because he is going to iraq for 3 months, and will be buying a new car when he comes back. There' not much mechanically wrong that I know of, but would you guys take it? My tranny in my cl is on the fritz and will need replaced soon, plus it'd be nice to have 2 cars again. I don't need to pay anything for it , I would just have to get the title transferred and get liability insurance for it added on. What do you guys think?

If it's free... why not? If you need it, it won't cost you much. Just insure it with Liability only and you'll be all set....

I think it leaks oil, but I figure that if that's all that's wrong with it, I can get an oilpan from a junkyard or ebay, and replace it. Couldn't hurt, with all the projects i got goin with my cl anyway, it'd be nice to rip it apart and not have to worry about if it's back together or not.

Take it if you have someplace to put it. I guess the street... Why not? Who knows if something happens, or need an emergency 2nd car...

Make it into a little project car or something and get it cleaned up and nice- you'll be happy if your tranny on ur cl does go and you need some transportation

yes, I do have a driveway and garage for it, at least for the next 2 months until i move. The inspection on it is next month, but he says that the brakes and tires are good. He drives it to work everyday, so hopefully I wouldn't have to pay for much for the inspection. I figure I'll drive it for a few months, and if it's too big of a piece of shite, then I'll just donate it. I'm gonna test drive it monday, the day my car goes into the trany shop to be ripped apart. So I'll see then. I just didn't know if it was worth takin, since it leaks oil, and the inspections coming due. But hell, it's a free car, got nothin to loose I guess

Is it a 2dr or 4dr?

If its a 2dr. those are popular to people who are into lowriders. Sell it to a lowrider fan.

But the way if its the 3.8L. Not alot of power but still a good running car. I used to own one w/ T-tops and some rims when I was young'er. Fun car. But its free. can be your beater ride. Can't beat that!! Go for it man!!

I used to drive an 87 Olds 442. The engine was the same as the Monte SS - It was a great car and very reliable. My family had the car for 12 years with no major problems

I'm probably gonna take it, though i'm a little leary, since it has a few problems, and the inspections up in august. But hell, it's free, if it runs, i'll drive it for now. If I don't want it, then i'll get rid of it later.
