I didn't search any numbers but as for the M3 being .3 seconds quicker from 0- 60, I say that's a lot. Specially considering that the S5 is AWD and will get off the line quicker. I'd be interested to see the 1/4 mile ET and trap speed.
I don't think anyone would argue that the M3 will outperform the S5 on practically all levels. The S5 really isn't a direct M3 competitor. It was meant more to aim at the 335.

If you want more of an M3 competitor, you gotta go RS5.

But in the end its nothing but paper racing. I could make a metro go faster around a track than a viper if the guy driving the viper didnt know how to drive stick

Yep, if you want comparable numbers, I'd say the RS5 would be the ticket.

But, honestly, if it is truly a need for speed...they have the R8. Who cares how much faster the M3 is...?

Vote for the M3 here. DBS, Zonda, or CCX if Daddy/Mommy have more $$$$ to spare.

Enzo too. Or McLaren F1.

I was going to vote Whiskers, but Option 4 is a keeper, unlike Robert Green.

And honestly, if you're dragging or tracking this thing... then both cars are the wrong one for you.

If it was me and I was looking for a good all-around performer that's comfortable to commute in, take trips in, etc... I love Audi... so I'd go S5 all the way.

I beg to differ! I think these cars are a perfect balance of daily driving duties and weekend track stars.

I dunno, dude...I think both the M3 and S5 are fantastic grand touring cars too. Terrific for road trips...and the track. Although, I'd say the M3 is more capable.

Agreed, but let's be honest... this thing will likely never see the track. The R8 should see the track before either of these... so a couple tenths of a second 0-60 should really not be a huge deciding factor for the OP's parents when deciding on a commuter.

The S5 has the exterior of a big car, esp. for a 2-door. The M3 comes as both 4-door and 2-door, but I have not driven either the S5 or the M3.

Choose the one you like sitting in the most.
