Smile s2000 people

My mom is looking for a nice used s2000. Prolly around a 2003. Any known issues with these cars? She is looking for one with less than 40K. Mainly wanting to know what if there are any common repair and maintainence issues with these cars. So far all of our hondas have had no surprises. Thanks in advance.

Nothing really. The 2000-01 bugs were all addressed and there's no issue you should worry about. Check the S2000 boards for more information.

I was shopping for S2000's feverishly this past week.. until I got myself to realize its not the best daily driver for Chicago lol... I just wanted one so bad. I wanted an '04, that's my favorite year. I know I'll probably get one at some point, just not right now. This is one of the best deals I found, have a look:

http://adcache.collectorcartraderonl...9/89359119.htm

S2000's are pretty reliable, here's a rundown of the model years:

'00-'01 plastic rear window, radio not so good, some had tranny issues
'02-'03 updated w/ glass rear window, slight tweaks to taillights, better radio, no known issues with the car
'04-'05 updated 2.2L motor 8,000rpm, different front/rear facias, clutch delay valve to prevent clutch drop (can be disabled after couple hours of wrenching), 17" wheels
'06-'07 updated ECU, drive by wire, addition of traction control, new seats w/ speakers in the roll bar, radio is better, polished wheels with slightly different look

Seriously, the S2K is a great car. I like the wheels on the '05+. The only reason why I don't own one already is because they don't come w/ side curtain airbags and won't buy a car without them.

btw this is a great search site:

http://oodle.com

it searches classifieds from dealers, private parties, local newspapers and auto weekly-type papers, along with ebay and others. It has a real-time distance meter which is real handy too. And its not just for cars.

Darn, I wish my mom had that kind of class to want an S2k.

She does have a TL though, so I guess that'll have to do for now...

Once I test drove one of these cars, it was like I was on drugs. I wanted it soooo badly I couldn't think of anything else!

Fortunately I came to my senses. It really only makes sense as a second car, or if you live in a place with curvy roads, no traffic and great weather year round!

Definitely buy 2004 or later. the extra 200 ccs makes the car much more civilized!

I couldn't stand the thought of letting it sit out in the rain all day at work, and it rains pretty much 9 months of the year around these parts. Not a great idea for primary transportation unless you live in an unusually dry climate.

Yeah she already has an Accord as a daily driver. This will be actually a fourth car for her and my dad.

s2k is awesome...if you don't mind a little bumpiness in the ride and if you're not too tall, it's not THAT bad as a DD. I had one as my dd for almost a year up here in PA where the weather seems to change every week...and as long as you keep revs not too crazy, it's not that bad in wet conditions.

In the one week we have had the car, we have put about 500 miles on it..! Until the Civic comes in, it is our daily driver...! I am really surprised how comfortable it really is....

yeah, as long as you don't go TOO far in it, it's good. I drove up to canada with my wife in it, and by the time we hit upstate NY, we had enough...weather was nice, but there's some areas where such a little car really jars your internal organs...

It's not that great considering there is a $2000 cash to dealer incentive on the S2000.

No shit? I sold my 02 w/ 40k for $20,000 at the end of last year. Was that just a really good deal, or are they really going that low now?

No, it just was that good of a deal. I keep telling her that was a fluke and to get the idea out of her head. I keep telling her she's gonna have to give around 20k for something decent. Also she is stuck on red w/tan or white/tan or white red/black. It seems 90% of these cars have solid black int. Tan seems the rarest. I tell her if she's gonna be so picky, buy a new one.

Not to be picky but...

The wheels on the '04-'05 look like this:

The wheels on the '06-'07 look like this:

I prefer the '04-'05 look.

A key difference between the 2000-2003 cars and the 2004+ is cockpit room. The 2004+ has an extra 1/2" or 1" of shoulder room or so.

It doesn't sound like much, but it makes a large difference.

We found a silver w/black - red. 2004 16K mi. It's about an hour and 20 min away. He will settle for payoff which is a little under $20k. Gonna go look Monday and if she likes it we'll prolly pull the trigger.

Yeah, especially for an 04... you usually don't see prices dip into the teens unless they have over 50K miles and/or are a 00 or 01... (at least up here in New England in the summer).

My view on older s2k's from working at a honda dealership and driving the older ones and servicing them, i dont like them because after alot of mileage and wear they drive like crap, they rattle and grind, clutch starts to feel crappy, ive seen alot of them coming in because people dont know how to drive them and misshift them, they tend to set random missfire codes, and most of the owners dont maintain them at all, from what ive seen! If i were ever to buy one it will be brand new with a warranty, plus you will start off fresh! But this is just my opinion from what ive seen best wishes on buying an s2k!

That would be my concern with a used S2K too. It's just one of those cars you can't be satisfied with driving at 2/10ths, it just begs to be driven hard and put away wet.

Not all of us are lucky to:

picked up an 05 S2000 that was owned by an older woman who didn't ever rev the engine too high...

I think we were really lucky... we test drove a few S2000s before settling on the one we have now....(the 05 owned by the older woman). The breaks were good, the car was in perfect condition...no scratches or even signs of wear! Car drives perfectly

Picked it up today, 2004 silver w red- black. actually had 17,115 mi on it. She paid $19500. Car is in good shape, has had some work done on front fender. It was backed over by a Seqouia at McDonalds and tore up the fender a bit. The body shop did a pretty good job. The headlight wasn't changed and still is scratched pretty good but I'm gonna change it out. Other than that the car is really nice. It really handles different than my 06 TL! Was owned by middle aged couple w 11 grandchildren. It was a 4th car for them, they also had a rx330, 740il, new 4 door wrangler and about a 300k motor home. I'll post pics when I get a chance.

Congrats on picking up the S2K!

Sorry to threadjack, but what do y'all think of this one I just found on Craigslist? I didn't want to start a new thread.
