Run flat tires

I'm planning on getting a used BMW 328 that comes with run flat tires. I'm considering replacing them with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires which are not run flat tires. Does anyone know if doing so will cause any issues with the tire pressure monitoring system or anything else? Thanks.

No problems with the TPMS. I switched out my run flats for Bridgestone RE760 Sports. Now, if I get a flat...that's another issue altogether.

^^^^^ Agreed. TPMS just reads tire pressure and has no idea what kind of tires you are using.

Had run flats on my 530xi T and made a luxury car run like a truck. First thing I changed and no looking back. DO IT!

Same here. My wife's Rav4 Sport comes from the factory with runflats but now wears standard radials. No issues.

First gens of RFT were terrible but they vastly improved.

Having had two flats on urban highways with insane traffic, I see some value there.

Yet I never paid more to get them, they are still expensive. Having to carry a wheel in the trunk sucks - my E90 has no dedicated room for a spare.

the weird thing about my car was that it came factory equipped with run flats BUT had a mini spare in it. A tire got torn up by a big piece of metal that flew off a truck on the NYS Thruway, we limped off the road and while trying to figure out what to do, I thumbed through the manual and voila, there was a mini spare listed in the back under the cover in the wagon. Oddly, it said in manual that if it had run flats, then no mini spare.

I'd like to get some all season run-flats for my Corvette. They currently have run-flats, but they're summer tires.

I would not recommend run-flats under any circumstances.

I once put Michelin Pilot Sport run-flats on my C5. Jaw-droppingly expensive! Then when I got a nail, found out that run-flats are NOT supposed to be repaired. Several tire shops refused and tried to sell me a new run-flat. Fortunately, I have a buddy with a tire shop and he patched it for me.

I live in an area with many contractor trucks and we average a nail or screw in one of our cars fairly often. This has never required a road-side tire change. All the cars have small compressors on board and we have always been able to keep the tire inflated till we reach a tire shop.

A few years ago, I bought a manual tire machine and commercial grade patches and DIY now.

Yup Many including BMW will tell you that run-flat cannot be repaired. (FYI, they are over $1500 for a set of 18" on tirerack) but they could be repaired.

They don't grip, they don't last long and they are noisy. They SUCK!

If my summer runflat tires were sucking that bad, i can't imagine how all season runflats would feel like.

Yeah. A $270 run-flat is supposed to take you 50 miles without air...ONE TIME.

You'd spend less on standard tires and towing.

This.

When I had a flat on one of my run-flats it became clear that two would need to be replaced. The cost of replacing two run-flats was only $100 less than getting an entire set of brand new UHP summer tires of the non-run-flat variety. Guess what I did?

And when my friend did patch my front runflat on my C5 (245/45/17) we got 20k more miles out of it. Those tires are still running on the rear of my son's S2000.

12 mm taller sidewall, with half worn tread is about 6mm taller and the rears are matched. To use up $500 of rubber, we're not sweating 6mm.
