Repair vs Replace

I have a pair of stone chips on my windshield. Both are on the driver's side. One is at the very top or the wiper arc and it will never bother me. The other is about 6 inches from the bottom of the glass directly in front of me. But it doesn't bother me a lot either.

Should I opt to repair the damage or have it replaced?

The car has 126K miles on it and a lot of those are highway. So the glass has some sand blasting from the roads and stuff being kicked up on it as I'm doing 80. It's a bit annoying when the sun hits it just right.

My insurance will pick it up, but I have a $100 deductible. Repairing it will cost about $80 from Safelite. My insurance company says it's up to me.

If I did opt to repair it, I will work outside of the insurance company. If I replace it I will work through them. Does anyone know if that will affect my rates at all?

Replace. It should not affect your rates at all, but you can always call and ask your insurance company. I had a windshield replaced a little while ago and there was no increase in my rates.

With 128K miles on it and 20 bucks more, you might as well replace it at a good place.

I doubt your insurance rates will increase. My parents have had many windshields replaced due to chips, cracks, etc with State Farm, and never once did it increase.

+2 on replacing the windshield. There is nothing (outside of sex) that is better than a brand new windshield.

No question, for $20 more get a new one.
Chances are after having it fixed, the chips will crack and you'll have to replace it anyway.

Just do what most members would do - replace with a new car

I would like it if this was a "My Windshield Was Cracked So I Bought An M35" thread, but I don't feel it wise to spend that cash if my car is running well. My hope is to get another 75K out of it.

I have a replacement scheduled for Friday AM.

In CA, windshield claim does not impact your premium. I'm sure that's the case everywhere. I say replace

replace. That way you get a fresh and clean un pitted windshield.

Are you even allowed to repair a chip on the driver side in your line of sight?

And just replace it.

Replace it but make sure you go to a reputable body shop or glass shop. I got my windshield replaced on my Integra by this mobile windshield replacement guy for $50 and if you look at it from the side there's gaps. My cousin got hers replaced by a similar guy and she had increased wind noise on the highway.

I believe if the chip is smaller than a dime then it should be fine. I have a small chip in my windshield and I had it repaired for $30 with resin.

in MA, windshields are covered 100% by insurance with NO deductable. But even if you have to shell out $100, thats not bad for a brand new windshield.
