Renewing Registration and Selective Service?

Tonight I was renewing my car registration and got this message:

You need to register for Selective Service. This will be done automatically with any transaction you perform today. Need more information?
You may update your emergency contact information. Keeping this information current may greatly reduce the amount of time needed to contact your loved ones if you are involved in an accident.
Does every state do this? I thought I was automatically registered into the Selective Service, when I registered to vote / turned 18...I'm in Florida by the way.

Nope.
When I got my license, I think there is a box to check for that, or something to that effect.

I can't remember the specifics, but I just remember that it wasn't automatic. For me at least.

Does the selective service even mean anything these days? So until now, I wasn't registered in the selective service?

You register for it by filling out a form, it can be found at a Post Office for example.

I remember filling out a form at the post office to sign up for the selective service.

More than likely, you were never registered.

op probably never registered. You can register via a letter they send you, checking a box on your license, or online.

When I was in high school in NoCal, I received the selective service form to fill out before applying to colleges-- most colleges required registration with the Selective Service, IIRC. However, I don't remember whether the Selective Service registration card was given by the high school or by the testing company during the PSAT/SAT application & testing process.

I don't think I ever got a card for registering, but to the OP: How did you get to be 23 without ever registering?

It may be how laxed things are these days.
I'm pretty sure I could've done it.
I think the only reason I registered is because...I don't even remember why. I just remember it being convenient and right there, or they already had my info, just needed a couple other things, or signature........something like that.

I know I didn't do it while at the DMV.

Whatever you do, sign up. If not, you can be prevented from getting certain types of jobs. Plus, you don't want Uncle Sam trying to find you. You can do it online, and its easy, and all questions can be answered in the FAQ section.

Normally, when you get a license or go to college it is a requirement.

now in reguards to the car registration. In the state of Ohio we can renew our our registation online or go to the BMV office. i always do it online. you don't have to sit in their damn place for 4 hours. their understaffed to beat hell. and it's getting worst due to them cutting back due to the budget.

With some states its automatic that they ask you to register. I recently went back to school and the student loan department made me fill out the form. I was like "bitch, I'm using the goddamn GI bill, how could I not be regestered?". Well, thats what I ment to say, it came out more like "oh, ok".
