Put money down on a Taco

With my change in status to a permanent work from home employee my annual mileage has dropped from about 20,000 to about 2,000; so much so my wife and I really don't need two cars. That got us thinking, what about a toy, maybe a new Miata, or a Cayman/Boxter even, or..., what about a truck to pull a boat and/or a small camper trailer? The last option won; last weekend I put money down on a new Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport DoubleCab, 6MT, in Blue Crush Metallic; I say, "put money down" as Toyota no longer allows dealerships to order to build, basically Toyota builds whatever the hell they want to build and then tell the dealerships what they can have. My sales rep told me my wait for my new Taco could be six to eight months, or maybe never.

I'll keep y'all posted.

Might try checking local & less local inventories. If you can find one at another dealer, they can probably 'dealer trade' to get it to your preferred dealer.

Maybe consider expanding your search? There must be one somewhere in the country.

Yeah, you're going to be waiting a VERY long time for Toyota to get around to building something like that without a special order for it.

LOL, yeah, I'm old, and to me at least, any vehicle in Electric Lime should be something like a 1970 'Cuda, not a pickup truck of any sort.

8 months? Wow. There might be a Porsche or two coming in that may have a discount (smoke and/or water damage not withstanding).

Too soon?

Seriously, I hope you can get what you want.

Thanks! Quite honestly, I have mixed emotions so I'll be happy regardless of whether they ever build the Taco or not; I mean, I haven't had a car payment since 2005 and don't really need anything new, but it just seemed like a cool idea.

Congratulations! 6MT

Any reason why you didn't go for a Tundra?

No 6MT; my wife and I joke we never learned how to drive a car with an automatic, and in our mid sixties, we have no desire to learn now.

The above said, the Tacoma is more than enough truck for our needs, the Tundra and other full size trucks are just way too big.

We had just put a deposit down on a 4runner to replace our 2010. It's one that was part of their allocation and should be on a boat somewhere. Our wait SHOULD be less than yours. They're expecting mid April at this point.

Update...

So, five and a half months after I put my deposit down, my dealer contacted me and told me they'd been given an allocation option of the exact Tacoma I asked for, but in Barcelona Red Metallic instead of the Blue Crush Metallic; I told them to snag it as quickly as they could. Snagging done, my truck will be built during the last week of August through the first week of September and should be up here in New Hamster sometime in November.

I have yet to decide whether to keep the 2006 Acura TL; I really love that car with it's super buttery soft 6MT, but with my new job I'm a permanent work from home employee (when I'm not on an airplane or at a customer site), I'm only driving maybe 3,000 miles per year, and certainly don't need three cars (four if you count my son's sweet 1989 Bronco with a 5.0 liter V8 and a 5-Speed manual transmission, which I have in my storage locker) for just my wife and me.

I'll post a few pictures when Taco comes in.

congrats, sounds like you're going thru the same mental gymnastics I am with regard to keeping an "extra" car around. In my case it's my 650GC and whether to keep it once the 911 arrives (still don't have a build allocation 354 days post-ordering/deposit). I love the looks of my GC and still get lots of compliments on it, besides, it rides like a dream, holds a lot of luggage for 2 and makes for a great highway long distance cruiser. I'll very likely keep it as it's been paid off for 4 years.

In your case, I would've chosen the Cayman

Dealer couldn't change the allocation to the color you want, if it's not in production yet
You're down to 2 now? 3er & 6GC?

Quite honestly, BCM vs. BRM isn't worth the trouble, I like both colors.

My brother-in-law had a '16 Taco TRD Sport in red, looked good. He's since moved on to a blue Tundra TSS.

Not how Toyota or Honda or any of those companies do this sort of thing. A build allocation is planned weeks in advance and locked in to the production schedule to ensure everything is there just in time to build the car/truck.

I really like the red more so than the blue so I think you made the right choice!

Toyota builds what they want and the dealers can choose from that.

Update...

My Tacoma was built earlier this week and per the build sheet, it should hit the dealership between 25-Sep and 14-Oct; easily a month or more before I was originally told.

Tomorrow the TL goes in for detailing and then my son is going to sell it for me. Yeah, we'll be down a car for the duration, but worst case I can get the 1989 Bronco out of storage and flog it for a few weeks.

Not sure how I missed this thread originally. So being late to the party - Congrats horseshoez!!

I'm in a similar situation where I have put about 4500 miles on my TL-S in the past two years total and we are buying out the lease on our friends car. So we will have three cars which is fine as we have a three car garage and insurance and property tax on the TL-S is negligible, but having a hard time deciding whether is makes sense to sell/keep the TL-S. I already keep the TL-S on a trickle charger because is sits so much already. 4500 miles over two cars in the next two years............

Good looking truck shoez!!

I realize you just took delivery, but the truck is screaming for running boards or side step bars - IMHO.

Wishing you the very best of luck and 100's of thousands of miles of happy motoring.

Congratulations

I'm at 218k miles on my 2011 Tacoma and it's been fantastic. I'm ready for a Tundra, but I'll be sad when the Tacoma eventually goes.
