Question Prospective SUV Buyer

My gf is currently looking into getting a new SUV, one that can take the beatings of off-roading, etc. I think safety and versatility are the two main important factors. A price under 35K is a must as well. I was looking into the Xterra as ive heard some great things about it. Any recommendations, thx in advance

4Runner- very reliable, interior can be nicely dressed up.
Ford Explorer possibly; I'm unfamiliar with its recent reliability record.

4runner is a good choice, the only thing i don't like about them is tht the seats can be uncomfertable. it is an awesome off road machine and it's ok on gas with the V6. my dad had one for a year and half and i drove it every so often. it's a car that will take a beating.

What's most important to you? New or used? Do you care about trading luxury for off-road capability?

If you're talking about a fun off-roader primarily, your best bet is a Wrangler. I'm a big fan of the previous generation Grand Cherokee, which can be considered somewhat more comfortable than the average, and should be better off-road than the current gen.

I'd stay away from the Ford and GM offerings - they're more road-going than off-road these days, unless you'd consider a pick-up.

The XTerra's probably the most off-road capable Japanese offering I can think of, especially since they've upgraded the engine a couple of years ago. Still can't see 4Runners, Sequioas, or Pathfinders being that good off road...but that's a personal opinion.
