The process of changing plates

I have an '03 TL-S that has to be returned off the lease in May '06, but I'm thinking about getting a vanity plate that has to do with Acuras in particular. I won't say it on here for the obvious reason that someone in New York State may steal it and I'd be kinda pissed. I think I'm going to end up with an RL or TL A-Spec after this car, so it would obviously be transferred to my next car if I got it. However, I would feel stupid if I opted to buy, say an Audi or Infiniti, after this car and I'm sitting around with an S4 or G35X (GOD FORBID! )with an Acura-based vanity plate.

Now, the question is, has anyone changed their plate to a vanity plate while the car was still in possession in your name? Was it that much of a hassle? What do I exactly need to change or alter in order for the plate to be valid under my insurance? And the cost, is it expensive to do it? I'm basically looking for information with experiences that'll help me go through the process. Thanks in advance, and sorry if this is a repost.
