Are pretty old license plates collectable?

I don't mean, like 1980, but like 80 years old?

Yes... some more than others... there's a bunch of collector websites out here...

I've got about a dozen plates, mostly newer, but a couple dating back to the 1930's....

Google for - license plate trade - that will turn up a few websites... hopefully they;ll have links to price guides...

For the most part they can be worth a few dollars, especially if they're in good shape. Many automotive collectors either use them for decoration or for presentation on various collectable cars. If you have any you want to sell, then PM me. Depending on condition I may be interested.

^ Exactly. There's a ton of guys that like having cooresponding plates with the year of their classic car. Some states/years are more rare than others, so do some research and see what you got. I remember seeing a few on Antique's Roadshow (yeah I love that lame show lol!) and one of them was super rare and worth quite a bit of money.

Thanks to all you guys! It just so happens I have 1932, NJ plates. Its interesting that, they are consecutive numbers: U46773 and U46774. I guess in those days; numbers weren't so; 'arbitrary'! haha.

clean them with gentle soapy water. if you got a old sink in your garage or barn draw up so lukewarm water. put a little dish soap in it. let them sit for a few hours. come back scrub them WITH CARE.(don't use an harsh pad or anything that might hurt the finish). then dry with a clean cotton towel. put up in a dry spot your done.

Let me know if you're ever needing something specific. I usually attend a number of estate farm auctions during the summer months and buy old plates and the like. Love old gas pumps as well.

You'd be amazed at what some of these farm auctions have. The farmers often pass on and the entire estate is auctioned off. Old license plates, oil cans, and other auto memorabilia randomly tossed into old orange and soft drink crates and auctioned off.

A number of years ago I came across a disassembled 426 Hemi strewn about in different crates.

I've got 20-30 of those wooden, dove-tailed phili cream cheese boxes-from I don't even know when. My Father stored small stuff, nuts & bolts in them. I imagine they are collectible to someone.

I've found a bunch of cool stuff like this on my place that my great-grandpa had. One day I'll clean 'em all up and hang them when I get my own place.

yeah; that stuff becomes special when its from a family member. A history to it, that, you can't put a price on.
