Id ask for all service records first. Id see what kind of things it has been in the shop for already and what maint it needs.
Oh this kinda belongs in car talk.

Someday, an RS6 Avant+
I'd get the BMW looked at by a mechanic you trust, and if it's clean throw your pink at the guy....
I've always loved those models. Fast as &@%^*, and not a premium like the M5. Plus, Dinan performance can be your friend.

and
Service records are your best friend. That gen isn't exactly the most reliable. I've seen a lot of them come in to my shop with CELs. If its reliable, I don't know if he's going to do an even trade (you said it was possible but not guaranteed).

Def ask for service records, the 4.4 V8 wasn't BMW's best engine. I've seen quite a few with a knock without having that many miles on them. And get some good snow tires....
Sport pack on the 540i?

I don't know who you've spoken with but there will be problems and some what often. I'm not saying the block is going to break and the rear dif. is going to need to be replaced, but those cars, in particular of that era are prone to having a lot of little annoying electrical problems and due to the nature of the car those little things can be expensive to fix.
I'm not saying don't do it, they are brilliant cars, but don't expect Acura reliability.

^ He already knows about the cooling issues which was a major part of things failing on that engine.
Besides checking the radiator he should be good to go. In terms of the engine that is. Electrical issues arent TOO bad, mostly burnt LEDs on the dash.
If you need a good PPI then ask www.euroteknik.com they are the local european car group. I know there are a few 540 gurus over there as well.
But i agree, it wont be no where near as reliable as your TL-S. After 100k on a BMW, it becomes hobby to replace stuff. As long as you enjoy it and can do it yourself, you good to go!

I have an 01 740i and an 03 540iT (Sport, rare) as daily drivers and so far I have no complaints on both. So far, I haven't replaced anything major on both. True, the cooling systems are the major weak points of these cars, but that's it. So far they haven't seen a shop for anything.
These cars have quirks, mostly electricals. My 740i has dead pixels on the IP but my 540iT doesn't. The cooling systems on both cars have been replaced by the previous owners, so I'm good for a while.
You can do oil changes yourself and BMW synthetic oil costs about as much as Mobil1 Synthetic. Filter is less than $10 per and the oil change interval is around 15k.
Overall, these cars give me more smile per mile than my old Honda/Acura cars could.

^^ Thanks. 2003 540iT Sport is indeed very rare (I was told only 59 or 69 made it onto the US soil) and I was lucky to find one locally in Socal with 45k miles back in September and it was in a very good shape. I just had to polish the paint and apply Leatherique on the seats because the leather was pretty stiff.
I'll find some pics and post them later.
I know there are a conflicting opinion on the oil change intervals. Personally I haven't done used oil analisys on these cars yet. I'm just following the MID so far. I guess if the UOA comes out unfavorable to me, I'll change the oil sooner.

A doctor I work with in Century City has one, he loves it. I am amazed anyone would drive a manual transmission here in LA. His only complaint is that the dash lights burn out and the knobs/switches seem to break easily.
