DAMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM! Either the TL's side impact resistance strength is really weak, or the Mini's structural front end is extremely strong. I hope no one got hurt in the TL.

^ car's are stronger in the front than they are in the side, if the TL t-boned the mini the mini would be micro

It's supposed to crumple, but not by that much on the sides. If there was anyone in the pass. side, they're probably not doing very well. I doubt there was, otherwise I'm certain there would be blood visible in the pics.

If calvino's brother drives likes calvino speaks, no wonder the car was wrecked.

As for the wreck, it looks like the mini's front end maybe pushed under the crossmembers that were made to stop T-boning like that. If I'm not mistaken, they're placed higher in the doors so as to stop the impact from a regular-sized car.

Exactly, I don't see how everyone doesn't realize this. It shouldn't take a structural engineer to know a front impact with the engine and all it's mounts would be more rigid than a door...

b.t.w.

The mini is totaled...

For a 50mph side impact it's barely pushed in... it did very well. How can you say it didn't? It's pushed in about 12 inches. And a lot of that is the hollow door space . That's pretty impressive since it had to stop a 3000lb car from 50mph in less than a foot. Not to mention the mini has a small footprint (i.e. it's not very wide) so all of it's force is applied to a smaller area. A careful eye will see the main pillar between the front and back door held back the force well.

What do you guys expect to break the laws of physics? The mini should just bounce off the car? For every force there has to be an equal or opposite force to counter act it. Imagine how much force a 3000lb car has at 50mph. Then imagine the amount of resistance needed to stop it in less than 12 inches. The TL did well...

For everyone saying the mini is barely damaged, that's a *bad* thing for the mini... The Mini doesn't seem to have much of a crumple zone in the front... that in itself would help minimize damage to the TL and lessen the impact. So the TL took almost all of the force needed to stop the mini. Again, it think it did great all things being considered.

Note to self; don't crash a mini into a cement wall...

Was that wreck a pull-out-in-fronty or a run-the-red-lighty type?

I was just going to say that. All things were not equal in this crash....one car hit with its front into the side of another car. Front ends always have stronger stuff up there, with crumple zones and whatnot.

Plus it was at 50mph, which is no joke.

personally i would avoid side impact at all costs.. those seem difficult for any car to handle..
the spans are too great and no one want's cross members between front and back seats..
all things considered TL did well..

that's exactly what I was thinking...

"hmm...it seems as though I'm going to have to run into this truck. How should I go about this? Y'know what? I'm going to hit him w/the front of my car. That'll probably be best. Yeah...the front - that side just looks way too weak. Alright - here we go..."

MINI Tank
Agree with what others have said side impact vs frontal impact are apples and oranges.

FWIW the MINI Cooper is built like a tank...and for a car it's size it performs very well in crashes.

The mini has to be built like a tank considering what vehicles it has potential to collide with on the road. Though it does need crumple zones the tolerances have to be much tighter on a car that small. Imagine a mini getting t-boned by an Excursion...worse yet an 18 wheeler. I'm not saying standard sedans would fair well either...simply that the mini is at a disadvantage from the start.

I agree completely with Siggy's sentiments. All things considered the TL did an excellent job withstanding the impact

I don't like how much the passenger seat is crushed. I'm sure if there was a passenger in that seat they would be injured a great deal. Look at it! Even the center console is pushed in. The seat is bent up. Plus you got debris. That's not good side protection.

When I worked traumas in the ER (Ft Worth), the amount of intrusion into the passenger / driver compartment was always a factor in how we treated the patient.
In this case there appears to be a definite failure of the side impact protection... possibly due to the speed or angle of impact...
