98clchick has some good choices up there.

toureg being suv of the year for motor trend last year, cayenne being based on the toureg is a plus then, and land cruisers were always awesome.

the range rover is a pretty good one too..

what i dont recommend is the Benz ML or the bmw X5 (and definitly NOT the X3.)
lexus is pretty good, the GX470 was based off the Sequioa. The toyota land cruiser is awesome too, but if you really want to go big and luxurious, check out the upscale model, lexus LX.

The Range Rover is an awesome vehicle, my oldman has an 04 and its been very reliable.

2006 models have some nice updates, stronger engines across the board (including a supercharged model, which is about $90k).

The new Range Rover Sport is hot, can get a loaded supercharged model for $70k (standard model bases at around $58k).

LX 470, my dad has got one of these, in pearl white, very nice truck. RR is nice as well but i dont know about the resale value on those things. The ML is nice as well specially the new one, kinda small for my taste in SUVs though.

Resale is actually rather good on the 03+ RR........desirable SUV for obvious reasons.

I doubt he'd consider a Land Cruiser if he doesn't want a Lexus.

What exactly is your dad looking for in the SUV? Big, small DD price range? Even though it is american I would check out some jeeps, I own a wrangler and it is fun in the summer. Other wise 4runner. Range Rovers are nice but not that reliable, just be aware of that.

Exactly! What is this vehicle to be used for?

Range Rovers = mucho maintenance

LX470 = Land Cruiser
GX470 = Land Cruiser Prado (Australia & Japan, maybe others)

My fam went with the Touareg. Well, my mom did. My dad liked the XC90 V8 a bit more. The Touareg is really nice, i'd say. Comfortable, yet not massive, luxurious looking but not showoffish. The Range Rovers are a bit pricey, but they're definitely the top of the heap. The FX is definitely the sportiest of them. If your parents would go for its looks, that'd be my first choice. I don't really like the 4 runner. My girlfriend has one. Its not very comfortable and its actually kind of hard to see out of (weird, functionless roof scoop). I guess you dont want a land cruiser if you dont want a lexus...since its just an lx470. Whoever said the gx was based off the sequoia was wrong, its based off the 4-runner (not to be rude, I just work in an office next to a lexus dealership, so I was around for the unveiling. Its really nice. If you can convince them that lexuses are a good buy, you should really look at it (as long as no one in your fam is taller than 6'3. The drivers seat looks big, but from some people i've talked to, the leg position is no longer comfortable after about 25 minutes or so. I like the MDX but I really think it's becoming outdated. Its been out for like 6 years now. Who wants to buy something new that's been out for 6 years. I recommend the Volvo and the Touareg..or the Range, in first place, if you guys have that much dough. The Touareg neeeeds to be the V8 though, it has a nice little growl to it and its pretty powerful on the highway. Go test drive and see what ya like.

Haha, I really didn't even read the first post, just looked at the title of the thread. Negs of the Range? Price and upkeep. If you guys live in a big city, then it won't be too big of a problem to get that sucker worked on. But for some people, its a long way to the nearest Range dealer. And you dont want any Ford guy working on your Range's BMW engine. Its supposed to be the top of the heap. Apparently its still a bit sluggish, (of course there's that new supercharged range rover for 06 and the range rover sport..i'm not sure if those are two different vehichles, i just remember reading an article on them a few hours ago). If you guys can to spend 80k on an suv, the range is def. the way to go. Personally, I dont like driving them. I find them boring and too big. Which is why I'd get an FX if I had to get one. Haha. If I were you, I think i'd tell him to get a 50k XC90 V8 or a V8 Touareg so that he can keep that 30k in spare change to buy you a sweet ride, if you know what i'm saying

choosing an SUV based soley on looks is kind of a soccer mom thing to do no? pretty sure the new audi is one of those sports 'activity' vehicles meant mostly for on road driving.

Does your father need to tow? Does he need ground clearance? Does he need cargo room?

It's impossible to recommend an SUV without knowing his needs.

Most people do not need SUVs IMO

FX-45 or QX-56... My cuz has the FX-45, while my uncle has the QX-56... If you need the power and size you with the larger, but the fx-45 is my pic.. Just the right size, sporty, and has the power as well...

well, he doesnt really need it for anything. he just wants one. he basically will never tow or haul anything at all. mostly its just easier when the family goes on trips and stuff. he wants a big car so he can fit more ppl in it when we go somewhere. at the same time i dont want him to get the hugee infinity thing.

the problem is, we belong to a very talkative community that is pretty rich. if you get something they have, its "oh he only got it cus i got it" which is really annoying. so this basically rules out almost everything except the range rover or toureg.

from what i read from you guys is that the range is a problematic vehicle and the toureg is really nice. i will def do some extensive research on both suvs. thanks for the info. any other comments are very welcome!!

Watch out for the Toureg and the range. I owned a Discovery and the quality is horrible. From what I saw in the service shop, the range is the same. Why pay 80k for a Ford? Now the Toureg, I have heard the same thing. I almost traded my 4 Runner in on one, glad people stopped me. Motor trend calimed they would take the SUV of the year award back, if they had known then quality problems. I cannot find the link at the moment. It is great looking, lots of power, fast (155MPH), and tons of amenities. But from I have heard, quality is out the window.

I know it is not exactly "rich guy", but have he thought of a loaded 4 Runner or a Sequoya? The 4 Runner loaded is more than the VW, for the "rich" aspect of it. Just a thought.....

Or a Landcruiser.

If he's rich and wants to hang with the Joneses he should go Range, G55, or Cayenne Turbo. They'll snoot at the Touraeg since "it's only a VW". I think Audi is coming out with one that'll be hot. Of course if he really gives a shit what other rich people think.
