^^ I guess it depends on the rash. When I bought my TL a few years back the OEM wheels were badly curbed, I am not sure if the guy fixed the rashes before powder coating the wheels but I cant tell for the life of me if they ever got curbed in the past .

I think Im going to plasti dip my stock rims. Its much cheaper and Id like to get an idea of how my car will look all black. Also I have some curbrash and painting is not worth the investment. Im waiting to upgrade to some 18s next summer anyway. Just wondering if anybody can elaborate on putting clear plasti dip over the black dip and/or painting OEM nighthawk black pearl over the plasti dip? Thanks!

if i dont tell you i doubt you would guessed that this is plasti diped rim
anthracite metalic 2 coats plus i will try do another two tomorrow and one coat of glossifier i know its cheap and not permament but it does work and u can change your rim color whenever u want... i do plan on Powdercoat once i get my mind set on the color i want... you can also paint the rims on top of the plastidip and still peel it off... remember that the more coats you put in the easier its gonna be to peel it off. i am happy with outcome

If you are talking about regular spray paint vs. Plasti-dip, the dip is much more durable.
Case in point, the OEM grill in my Legacy. It was what I ran in the winter. I had sprayed it flat black before with regular spray paint and it chipped up badly after 1 season. I eventually redid it with Plasti-dip.
Here it was right after I did it, 11-18-2011
And this after most of 2 winter seasons and 50+ trips to the mountain. 2-6-13
And it was still nearly perfect when I sold the car in October. The stuff is impressive.

And my latest Plasti-dip project. I usually powder coat but I was a little strapped after dropping $750 for snow tires. They came out well.

Looks good, Matt.
I plastidipped my wheels when I wrapped the car...Im finding that they are easy to clean, but fade pretty quickly. I've had to redo them once in the past 2 months just to get that fresh black color back.
Freshly dipped though, there is no way to tell they are dipped. The finish is great with just the right amount of satin.

^ I have never tried it myself, it might protect them from some of the uv fade a bit longer??? It will make them have the gloss finish.

One thing about Plasti-Dip make sure you get enough coats on, like a crap load.. I picked white for my rim's, which hell looked awesome! But brake dust, and other crap on the roads made it so annoying to clean, and once I decided to take it off it took like 5 hours of hell... oh god never again

Plastidip worked great on my friend's emblems. The weird thing though is that his front emblem looks perfect, while the rear had small chips that broke off
We made sure to prep super carefully too. Car was already washed, but we followed up with wet microfibers, then rubbing alcohol. Very light coats, about 5 in total.
I rarely see people have issues with their wheels though.

Powder coating for aluminium rims is not a good idea. Powder coating is meant for steel. The baking process in powder coating can anneal aluminium wheels. If you find someone that keeps it cooler and doesn't run the temperature over 250 degrees you're fine. Most shops don't because it takes longer to cure.
Anodizing is the safest and preferred way to coat aluminium. This is why most companies mention that powder coating your wheels will void your warranty.
